Who cares about Obama's NCAA picks? - Jason's Take

Who cares about Obama's NCAA picks?

I saw the story on the Web on Wednesday. I read it again in a competing newspaper on Friday.

It's the news we've all been waiting for! Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has selected North Carolina to win the national championship!

I know what you're thinking.

You're probably asking yourself, "Now, how can I use that bit of knowledge to work for me?"

Unfortunately, I have no answer to that question. Frankly, I find Sen. Obama's opinion on this matter to be completely inconsequential.

But it got me thinking about some of the irrelevant stories we in the news media inexplicably tend to latch on to.

For example, my colleague Jim Owczarski blogged earlier this week about Terrelle Pryor, the No. 1 high school football prospect in the nation.

After much grandstanding, Pryor announced Wednesday that he would be attending the "University of Ohio State."

(Funny, I always thought it was THE Ohio State University.)

At any rate, Jim rightfully pointed out that Pryor's announcement shouldn't have been big news anywhere outside of two or three cities in the United States.

Instead, it was all over the papers nationally and all over ESPN. My question is, why? If you're not an Ohio State fan, why would you care?

It's a pointless story!

That's exactly the way I feel about Obama's NCAA picks.

If the Senator had selected Butler, Siena, Oral Roberts or Austin Peay to win the national title, now THAT would have been news.

Instead, he played the chalk and selected the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament.

That's even more boring than my conservative pick of UCLA is this space last week!

Seriously, who cares who Obama picked? I don't care who Hillary Rodham Clinton or John McCain picked either.

Digressing quickly, can someone please put the Bulls out of their misery?

The last couple weeks have brought three disgusting losses. The Bulls blew an 18-point lead at home in the fourth quarter against Philadelphia.

A nine-point lead at New Orleans turned into an 11-point loss. And then came a 22-point blowout loss at home to San Antonio.

I'm tired of hearing of this so-called "playoff race" the Bulls are engaged in. If the Bulls somehow get in the playoffs, the Celtics will blow them out four straight games.

I hope the Bulls miss the playoffs. They are better off getting a lottery pick than matching up with Boston.
