OK, maybe that's hyperbole, but Houston outfielder Michael Bourn made a fool of himself Monday night.
With the game still scoreless and two men on in the top of the fourth, Cubs catcher Geovany Soto hit a ball into the left-center field gap.
The ball hit about 15 feet high up the wall. The 5-foot-11 Bourn couldn't have made the catch even if he were Manute Bol with a stepladder. That didn't stop him from throwing himself face first into the wall.
Naturally, he missed the ball by several feet. It took an odd carom and rolled all the way back toward right center. The lumbering Soto rumbled around the bases for a 3-run, inside-the-park homer.
If Bourn merely pulls up and plays the ball off the wall, it's no more than an RBI double. You could almost forgive such a mistake if it happened to a visiting player. But playing in his home ballpark, Bourn should have played the angle of the wall better.
Most laughably, Astros manager Cecil Cooper came out to argue after the play. The ball could have just as easily been ruled an out-of-the-park homer as it hit the yellow line near the 404-foot sign. But who cares? Either way, it was three runs for the Cubs and a terrible play by the Houston outfielder.
