Did anyone catch the Mets-Yankees game on Sunday Night Baseball? Former Sox manager Jerry Manuel got ejected. Good to know Jerry still has a pulse.....
At any rate, the umpires in New York blew a tough call during the fourth inning of that game. Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado hit a drive right down the left field line. The ball hit the top of the fence in fair territory, skipped to the left and skimmed the outside of the foul pole.
The third-base umpire initially ruled the ball fair (and rightfully so), but after a conference, the call was overturned. Delgado was robbed of a three-run homer. The slugger eventually hit an RBI single, but the Mets had two runs taken away from them as a result of the confusion.
The call turned out to be inconsequential because the Mets won the game 11-2 anyway. But it was amusing to see Manuel, now the Mets' bench coach, screaming at the umpiring crew from the dugout, even after the on-field argument had subsided.
Eventually, the umpires tired of Manuel and tossed him from the game. Rarely (if ever) did we see that type of emotion from Jerry when he was managing the White Sox. He seemed to be into the whole passive resistance thing. Hence, the nickname "Ghandi."
