Here's the poster page designer Michael Lush created hyping tonight's showdown between East Aurora and West Aurora. I think it came out great. The game was awesome, too. I listened on the radio at my desk tonight. West Aurora pulls off a shocking upset, defeating East 72-66 at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.
The two schools have met 213 times since the rivalry began in 1913. With tonight's win, West now holds a 127-86 all-time edge in the series. I can't help but point that out, being a West Sider and a West High grad and all. (Sorry, East fans.)
West Aurora improves to 7-8 on the season, which isn't half bad considering the Blackhawks started the year 1-7. Things have been going a little bit better since Christmas. Tonight, senior guard D.J. Vaughn played arguably the best game of his career - 18 points and the game's MVP trophy. Junior Brandon Hayes came off the bench and definitely played the best game of his career for West - 14 points and six rebounds. The kid averages 4.2 points and 1.7 rebounds. What a great night for both those two guys.
It was a tough night for East star Ryan Boatright. Well, Boatright did score 33 points. He's a fantastic player and he played a terrific game, but it's a tough night for him because his team lost. Boatright played middle school ball on the West Side, and I know how badly he wanted to win this game.
But as we've seen through the years, the favored team doesn't always win in this rivalry. The Tomcats, 10-5 on the season, have proven they can play with some of the state's best teams. It didn't matter tonight as West High pulled off a stunner.
Congrats to both sides on providing another chapter in this great high school rivalry.
