Shocking end to San Jose-Colorado playoff game

Every now and then, you see something in sports that you've never seen before. Last night, this one left me stunned. I had to watch the replay again to believe it. I actually feel bad for the San Jose Sharks. I wouldn't wish this kind of loss on anyone except the Detroit Red Wings.

San Jose outshot the Colorado Avalanche 51-17. The Sharks just could not get a puck past Colorado goalie Craig Anderson. There were no goals scored in regulation. The game went to overtime. Then, in the very first minute, this happened:

Colorado now owns a 2-1 series lead. Unbelievable.

:O I haven't been watching hockey for very long at all, but I've never seen a player shoot the puck into his own net before! Boy, the 'Lanche sure got lucky! ;)

Because there is no one else in the world who would refer to the Colorado hockey team as the 'Lanche. ;)

I'll have to be a little bit more discrete with my future comments so as to leave you guessing as to whether or not it's really me. ;)

Oh, I didn't know it identifies my comments by IP address. Funny, I hear the same thing about other posters/lurkers being confused by my presence....

ChiSoxGirl, it's too bad you were never exposed to the greatness of Alexander Karpovtsev. He scored about 5 "own goals" in his stint with the Blackhawks.

I'm seriously considering changing my top worst own-goal to this now. Before the Boyle incident, my worst own-goal belonged to Ryan O'Byrne. I remember watching the Islanders playing in Montreal early last season, and the Islanders had just taken a penalty. Carey Price went off on the delayed penalty. O'Byrne was in his own zone and tried clearing the puck around the boards to his other defenseman. Unfortunately, the puck went right into the vacated net! His own-goal tied the game up (and this incident happened late in the 3rd). The Islanders ended up winning in the shoot-out, and then the Montreal crowd REALLY let O'Byrne have it.

I think O'Byrne's was worse from a hockey perspective. But, Boyle's came at a far more crucial timing.

Alexander Karpovtsev was truly a work...I think he scored as many goals as he did "own goals." I have the infamous Pat Foley rant saved to my computer at home so that I can listen to it whenever I feel like it.

His lone claim to fame was scoring the game-winning goal in the Hawks' only win in their series against St. Louis 8 years ago. Otherwise, he didn't do crap for us! I think that, for people to be able to buy playoff tickets from now on, they must be able to name who scored that game-winning goal in game 1 of the 2002 Western Conference Quarterfinals. :)

Ok, I watched that YouTube clip of Ryan O'Byrne scoring his own goal three times and still couldn't find the damn puck; I never saw the goal. :( I'm just going to take your word for it that it actually happened. I'm such a hockey novice. The game is just too fast for me at this point of my "knowledge."

BTW, when was that game?

I would have guessed that game was several years ago, given the quality of the clip....
