How many illegal immigrants have to enter the United States before Congress addresses one of the biggest challenges this country is facing?
More than 12 million, apparently. The Senate killed Bush's compromise immigration plan Thursday, pushing off reform until after the 2008 presidential election.
Can we really wait that long?
Republican conservatives defeated the bill, calling for border security before granting illegals a path to citizenship and creating a guest-worker program. So instead of passing an imperfect piece of legislation that would at least attempt to get a handle on the problem, we'll have to listen to politicians on both sides of the aisle argue about the topic for at least the next two years or so. What an alternative.
Let's put immigration reform right there on the "to-do" list next to Social Security reform, health-care reform and paying down the national debt.
