Hastert once again finds his voice

According to The Swamp, the Tribune's Washington blog, Dennis Hastert has once again found his voice.

In a House Energy and Commerce Committee meeting today, the former speaker let the Democrats have it over a proposal to expand a children's health-care program. It's been awhile since our congressman made headlines, but he apparently is also ready to take on the Dems over energy policy.

Is Hastert gearing up for one last fight, or is he finding causes that will fuel a run for a 12th term?

According to The Swamp, "it's clear that we will hear from Hastert as the year wears on."

Hastert has been rather quiet as a lawmaker since his party lost control of the House, but if today is any indication, he plans to speak out more often. He's been working on energy legislation for a number of weeks and appears ready to challenge the majority on its energy approach.

It's great to see Hastert gearing up for another battle. Either he's ready to go out with a bang, or he's finding a renewed passion and purpose as a rank-and-file lawmaker. Hastert plans to announce his re-election plans within the next few weeks, but it's nice to know even if he doesn't run again that he doesn't see himself as a lame-duck politician just because he lost his title and influence.

Can Hastert re-invent himself post-speakership, or will his legacy forever be tied to President Bush and the unpopular Iraq war that cost Republicans control of Congress?

I'm not sure how Hastert's vocal opposition to healthcare for children is an indication of his ability or willingness to speak his mind. But really, Hastert has been anything but a quiet, lame duck since January.

In fact, he's been quoted extensively since the new Congress began, primarily because of his prior position. Just Google News "Hastert" (or use Lexis/Nexis) and you'll see he's been no shrinking violet in opposition to everything Democrat...particularly the Iraq War which he continues to support.

But like you, I find the prospect of Hastert's opposition to popular legislation like children’s healthcare pretty exciting myself.

Perhaps he'll take on the dems in that new E85 vehicle he promised to buy after being caught on film jumping from a hybrid into a SUV when he thought he was beyond the photographers.

Denny's crashing right along with hid buddy Bush.

Denny is a disgrace to his district. His political fortune is sinking along with Bush's and every other Republican. Do us a favor Denny, and get out of DC.
