Local police departments generally are wary of getting involved in the messy business of illegal immigration even though legally they can. But one Illinois town has taken a stand, authorizing a partnership of sorts with the federal government.
Waukegan on Monday moved a step closer to giving its cops the explicit authority to conduct immigration violation investigations. Should Aurora be next?
It's important to note that Waukegan officials claim police won't be roaming the streets in search of illegal immigrants. Rather, when immigrants -- legal and illegal -- are convicted of serious crimes, police would be able to start deportation proceedings.
On June 18, the Waukegan City Council authorized the Police Department to apply for two police officers to be trained for a federal program that would allow those officers to start deportation proceedings for legal and illegal aliens convicted of violent offenses such as sexual assault, murder or drug violations.Police say they will not direct resources from this program to the enforcement of non-violent misdemeanor and traffic offenses.
Certification has been granted to 21 municipalities in 11 states.

As long as police aren't diverting resources in a witchhunt against illegal immigrants, I don't see the problem here. And I guess I don't understand all the fuss. If you're here illegally and you commit a crime, you should be sent packing.
I don't really buy the argument from the groups opposed to this that it will make immigrants -- legal and otherwise -- fearful of providing police with aid in investigating crimes. Isn't that already the case?
Should Aurora be next? ABSOLUTLEY!! If they had done this years ago maybe the situation around here wouldn't be so bad. They are already breaking the laws of this country by being here illegally. If they want to commit crimes they can do it in their own countries. We have enough problems with our own people.
I don't understand why it would be a problem - it is hard enough that tax dollars and resources are already overextended to accomodate schools, police, fire and city departments. If someone is illegal and committing a further crime then good riddance. Rather similar to when a kid is in the school on the weekend - presumably, no one is to be there. But, if they are there with good intentions, e.g. trying to work on a project then most likely they will just be asked to leave. If they are there to spray grafitti or otherwise cause mischief or vandalism then they are arrested and suffer the consequences. Why should illegal immigrants receive special treatment?

Everyone has an opinion on what would fix our communities, our cities, our state, our country. Comments of "If we did this or if we did that it would fix this and fix that" but sometimes we look at things with one view, with the blinders on not wanting to see all the effects of what one change would make on everything else. Would implementing this policy within Aurora help crime in our city as well as make an impact on weeding out immigrants from our community? (remember the word "immigrants" doesn't just apply just to Mexicans it applies also Polish, Indian, Asian, Canadian and anyone who was not physically born in this country) I would say yes I would imagine that incorporating this policy could be beneficial but if it was truly implemented with the right intentions not because we are biased against a particular nationality. If implemented then the criteria for identifying the nationality of a person would need to be standard accross the board even for those the police department would not suspect would be an immigrant. If 2 people are arrested and one is Hispanic the other Caucasian and no standard was set for identification of nationality then the person of Hispanic heritage would be antagonized unjustly having to take additional steps to prove nationality verses the person who is Caucasian. If a standard is set then both would need to take the same steps to prove their nationality. So lets take an example of the scenario proving nationality: 2 people get arrested one is Hispanic and one is Caucasion, they both get charged (remember charged does not mean guilty) with a crime and are booked. Then the process of identifying nationality comes into play, the most obvious standard for identification would be an ID, a social security card and a birth certificate. (because although assuming a person's nationality just by looking at them would be an easier process it COULD NOT be a standard process) So then with this added feature the booking process would be lengthier and require the police department to staff more people for not only the additional work it would require to implement this in the booking process but also to maintain larger numbers of inmates in the jail. Why you ask, well because although most people keep their ID with them and even maybe their social security card they more than likely won't carry their birth certificate with them. That would then require the person being arrested to get their birth certificate, have someone bring it to the station to prove nationality. Depending on the circumstances this could take days, even weeks if the person was born in another state and needed to have their birth certificate mailed to them. This means more time spent in our jails and of course more of our tax dollars to pay for all these additional expenses. Its a vicious cycle, but remember one thing can change the course of many other things, one policy change can alter our taxes in significant ways. I don't disagree with idea of the process but remember there are already law inforcement officials put in place to do this job its called the INS and yes our tax dollars do pay for them to do their jobs. Lets not reinvent the wheel for the wrong reasons nor be biased of those individuals we ASSUME are the cause of all our problems. How is it our ancestors whom were all immigrants and of various nationalities came to live amongst one another and commune with each other even with their language barriers? Don't blame our woes on those we think are the cause of our problems because if there is a will there is a way! Those who complain about our work being taken away and not having jobs because of the immigrants should think long and hard about the truth behind their words. If we employ that many immigrants in our country then how is it us as citizens would not have jobs? Because our citizens are not willing to work at these jobs that are being given to the immigrants, not that they are not available to them. Our standards have become too high and we are like spoiled children assuming it should just be given us not earned. And yes the welfare system in this state and country has populated even more discontent amongst all. So where lies the true fault with them or with you and I whom are the children of this country? Truthfully it is with you and I for we not only have the advantage of all our country's resources on our side we also have the ability to make a difference through our voting choices. Lets not be like spoiled children always blaming others for their woes, lets be better than that, lets appreciate all that we have and make things better by working with each other not against one another and even becoming a community with those we consider to be our biggest problem. Changing things from the inside out is always harder but in the end the outcome will be all the greater!
NOT ALL IMMIGRANTS/ILLEGALS ARE MEXICAN. QUIT YOUR RANTING ABOUT PUBLIC AID GOING TO ALL MEXICANS. THERE ARE MANY RACES RECEIVING AID. THE APPLICATION & ELIGIBILITY PROCESS IS NOT ACCORDING TO YOUR RACE.
I agree with you Aurora Citizen not all of illegaels are mexican and Not all of them are Bad people. yes they are here illegal but they want to provide a better life for their children or themselves. thats why they might come to AMERICA I thought we are a great country and we should treat others no matter where they come from, the way we want to be treated (Malissa I think you just dont like us mexicans)
I have operated a small business that has used the hispanic community as laborers and employees for the trade. Over the past couple of years, it seems as though the majority of those employees are turning self employed in the same trade BUT here is the kicker.
The folks are being paid CASH for jobs from upper to middle class individuals lookin' for a deal. When they are paid, they are not paying taxes, FICA-FUTA-SSA, etc. They are merely paying their brother's nephews and cousins cash who then stick that cash in their pocket and go to the nearest Western Union and send it all away to a small remote town where they have a family.
We bid against these individuals who carry little or NO insurance. The fail to provide a fair and honest bid and they usually do not have insurance...but yet the american public goes for it! FRUSTRATED! None the less, if you are getting a project done by a tradesman, it is no different than buying american made products. Hire "american made" people to perform you work!
YES, we cost a little more but when WE hit YOUR utility and cause some damage WE will have the insurance to cover it. OR if WE took a deposit from YOU we will FOLLOW thru with the job!!!!

Illegal aliens no matter what the color, size and shape are an extreme danger to the security and well-being of the American people and the United States. Their only purpose is to steal money illegally working for illegal employers. The employers are guilty of income tax evasion and other felonies.
My own mom had a wreck with a traitorous nasty illegal alien and would've died if someone else hadn't helped her. The struggle against this refuse from Mexico and other traitor nations has only begun.

Employers should be fined heavly for hiring illegal aliens. Send faxes daily and call but Durban, Obama are all for raising taxes and hell bent on us supporting illegal aliens. I was in Nashville TN. in 2003 and read in the Nashville paper that the GOV. wanted the Sheriffs Dept. to round up illegals. The Sheriff said he couldn't, that it would cost his dept. too much money. That there was over 8 MILLION illegals in central Tennessee alone with over 3 MILLION in the Nashville area. Can Do Co. estimates that there is over 135 MILLION illegals in the country. We have Israel running our foreign policy using nuclear black-mail (Israel has said more than once that if we didn't go after certain countries that they would use nuclear weapons on them) and Mexico is running our Domestic policies using food contamination blackmail. (E COLI). and 3/4 of the population believe the world was created 6000 years ago and are staggering around looking up at the sky mumbling ( DUH )it's predicted. GOD BLESS AMERICA. If Aurora did the following, illegals would move on w/ a quickness:
1. Adopt the 287G program that allows local police to start deportation proceedings against illegals that stopped for another violation
2. Refuse any financial aid to someone who can't show citizenship
3. Force employers to verify their employees immigration status or face huge fines.
Unfortunately, Aurora makes way too much money off of those that are hear illegaly. I am sick of the third world atmoshpere that our city is becoming. How many more lavenderia's, dollar stores, and Western Unions , western wear, pawn shops and Plaza de Mexicos (seriously, we have a few) do we need?????
