A compelling figure in war on gangs

BY MIKE CETERA

I've written about Orlando Rivera before, but he continues to be a fascinating figure in the gang cases being brought to trial.

He once again is the key figure in a trial that just opened in Chicago against several members of the Insane Deuces street gang in Aurora.

During opening statements in federal court in the Dirksen Building Thursday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Morrissey outlined how Rivera's confession and his offer to record gang meetings will be the key evidence.

"Those tapes are the backbone of the case," she told the jury. "They are the defendants' own words, spoken when they thought no one was listening. Listen to the tapes. Follow the guns."

Rivera's work with law enforcement authorities perfectly illustrates how these gang cases are often made. Rivera, charged three times with attempted murder and no fan of police, is being forgiven his past actions in order to put more gang members away.

Read a profile of Rivera here and here.
