The Campaign Sideshow: Volume 1

BY DAN CAMPANA

Yesterday, we wrote about the first whiff of mayoral race silliness after a Stephanie Kifowit campaign email was touched up to proclaim her broke.

A little more trickled in from the trail today.

Spying in church?: During a gathering of black church and community leaders to offer their public support to Mayor Tom Weisner, a brief disagreement popped up at Mount Olive Church between Alderman Scheketa Hart-Burns and two women who attended.

After one of the women asked aloud if she could pose questions to Weisner, Burns announced the woman was not invited, not from Aurora, not a member of any local church, but was a Richard Irvin supporter. The woman took exception, but it wasn't clear to which of Burns' statements.

The women then stepped into a side room, where this little flare up was apparently put to rest by Quad County Urban League President Theodia Gillespie.

Missed signs: In Mount Olive's community room, a handful of "Irvin for Mayor" signs sat quietly in the corner for a few minutes before they were stashed behind a stack of chairs.

Hard to miss signs: In an unscientific poll of signs along New York Street and Galena Boulevard, Irvin is everywhere. Seven of his blue-and-yellow placards are clearly visible to passing motorists cruising stretches of the two roads between Commons Drive and Lake Street.

Weisner has five, a couple of which are sitting in vacant lots. Kifowit has two. Terri Ann Wintermute has one.

Try Mount Olivet.

And why not point out how the Weisner event just happened to come an hour before the African-American event underwritten by the City of Aurora.

It's good to be the mayor when you can buy endorsements with taxpayer money.

The full name of the church is Greater Mount Olive Church of God in Christ. It is not Mount Olivet.
