The Bolingbrook Raiders boys soccer team lost 3-2 to visiting Lincoln-Way Central on Monday night.

The Bolingbrook Soccer Team took on conference rival Lincoln Way Central in a SWSC crossover game. The Knights struck 1st with a goal from Nick Fox. Lincoln Way Central tallied another goal late in the 1st half by Phil Galounis the Knights opened the scoring at 2-0. The Bolingbrook Raiders looked confused and wondered what was happening to be losing 2-0 so early in a match. But the Raiders kept fighting and got there first goal on a pass from Patrick Bizimana to Alex Cruz who fought through a crowd of Knights to tally the 1st goal of the game for the Raiders. With the score 2-1 at halftime the Raiders felt like they were in striking distance. Early in the 2nd half the Raiders increased the pressure on Central and forced a miss touch in the back that found Arturo Cruz as he touched the ball from the goalie and buried the game tying goal back corner 2-2. The Raiders felt they were the ones in the driver's seat with numerous chances to score in the second half. But once again the defense let done the Raiders again. The Raiders defense has made several mistakes this season that have cost there team the game. With about 6 minutes left the Knights bent in a free kick from the top corner of the box. The kick was given because of a bad foul by a Raiders player who was out of position. The Knights squeaked out a close one at the Brook 3-2.

The loss drops the Bolingbrook to 6-6-2 Overall and 2-3 in the SWSC. This will just about guarantee that the Raiders will not win the conference title once again.

Alan Holtz let us know that the Brooks Middle School baseball team will play in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 3A state finals on Friday. According to Holtz, this is the first time in school history that Brooks has advanced to state.

The Bulldogs (15-3) will play Normal Parkside (14-4) on Friday at 12:15 p.m. at the Eastside Centre in Peoria. If Brooks advances to the semifinals, the Bulldogs would play the winner of Teutopolis (19-1) and Danville North Ridge (15-3) in the semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Here is how Holtz described the action from last weekend's sectional and previous tournament victories at the regional tournament.

The Brooks Middle School (15-3) varsity baseball team rose to the occasion on Saturday by out dueling the Homer Mustangs 2-1 in the thrilling extra innings game. Both teams were locked in an epic struggle as neither team was able to score a second run during the standard 6 innings. Brad Elmore and Steve Waldrop pitched a combined no-hitter. The Mustangs only scored on an unearned run during the 5th inning. Elmore helped himself by smashing a solo homerun during the top of the 6th that sent the crowd into a tizzy. Later Elmore knocked in the go ahead RBI with a double to right field, scoring Mario Samuel in the top of the 8th. The Bulldogs made it to the sectional game by narrowly defeating Jane Addams Middle School of Bolingbrook 4-2 in the second round of the regional playoff and by defeating Lisle Middle School in the regional championship 9-0. Elmore pitched a complete game shut out in that game, while Scott Foltz and Chandler Pikarski each hit a long ball.

As we reported on Friday, the Bolingbrook Raiders girls volleyball team will likely be without the services of junior Alexa Alfaro for the remainder of the season.

Alfaro told The Brook Blog in an e-mail on Sunday that the bone scan displayed multiple fractures in her left leg. Despite that, Alfaro is holding out hope that she could get back on the court when the playoffs begin. Regional play begins Oct. 29.

i have multiple stress fracures in my leg. one is on top of my foot, another is on the inside of my shin, and i might have another stress fracture somewhere in my leg. but i know i for sure have two. the dr. & trainers have put me in a walking cast but i still have to use my crutches. I'm out for the season because healing takes about 4-6 weeks ]: unless some miracle happens and im able to play again by the time regionals come along. and im really pushing for that miracle.

Brad Geever almost made it a repeat performance. The junior quarterback was on his way to a 77-yard touchdown run on Friday night against Joliet Township on the same bootlege play, albeit this time to right, that he scored a 92-yard touchdown on against Morgan Park two weeks ago.

This time there was no Orlando Thomas to throw a key block. This time Geever was caught from behind at the 5-yard line.

He doesn't care. The Raiders scored a few plays later and went on to blow out the Steelmen 48-0 to stay undefeated and qualify for the playoffs with their fifth win.

"I'm just happy we scored," Geever said after throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for a third on a 13-yard run. "I got caught from behind. If we wouldn't have scored, I would have been more mad than I was, but I can't do anything about it now."

Except get ready for the hooping and hollaring during film study. My experience with these things is that his teammates will be nice about it, but getting ran down like that opens a guy up to some razzing.

After the Morgan Park game, Raiders coach John Ivlow said something along the lines of Geever is the worst athlete on the field, but made the biggest play. Ivlow said that Geever's mom, Laura Graf Geever, didn't take kindly to that.

"His ma jumped me behind the concession stand today and started yelling at me about saying that, and I told her, 'I'm sticking to it,'" Ivlow said. "He is. I'm sticking to it. Worst athlete on the field. But he's a great high school quarterback. He makes the right reads. He's not going to hurt you."

Unless you're a Bolingbrook opponent that is.

Welcome to our second Friday Night Live! of the season. The Bolingbrook Raiders (4-0) are hosting Joliet Township (1-3) tonight for homecoming. I will be out and about meeting people, getting their opnions and taking their photos. Most if not all of this photos will also appear in a photo gallery at TheBolingbrookSun.com in a day or so.

The Bolingbrook Raiders girls tennis team lost 4-3 to Joliet Twp. on Thursday.

This was, by far, the closest conference match we have played in years. The girls have worked very hard this year to be able to compete like they did against Joliet. It is disappointing that we couldn't squeeze out 1 more win, but we will take this as a learning experience for future close matches. We will continue to work in practice on correcting our mistakes and gaining confidence in our shots.

Winners for the Raiders were Giselle Velasco 6-3, 6-4; Celina Onyejiaka 0-6, 6-4, 6-1; Shannon Riley and Cathy Villagomez 6-0, 6-4.

Bolingbrook Raiders junior volleyball player Alexa Alfaro will miss the rest of the season due to a stress fracture in her left ankle, The Brook Blog has learned.

Alfaro, who was Bolingbrook's leading hitter as a sophomore, had a bone scan on Sept. 19. The results of that bone scan revealed a stress fracture.

The injury originated when Alfaro was hit in the ankle with a line drive playing softball.

The Bolingbrook Raiders girls volleyball team lost to Andrew on Wednesday night in three games. After the Raiders took the first game 25-15, Andrew won 25-20, 25-22.

Bolingbrook is now 3-10.

We are improving each match. Going into the match, Andrew was 4-0 in the conference . This was the first conference team we took to 3 games. Our team's kill average was the highest all season (32) .The tournament this Friday and Saturday will really help build on last night's success.

Thomas Page is the manager of the 12U Bolingbrook Bandits travel baseball team. He is attempting to lose 50 pounds before Jan. 22, 2009. Along the way he is raising money for the Bandits through per-pound sponsorships. This is the second of his weekly journals for The Brook Blog.

Well, the diet has been going good so far. To date, 7 pounds and counting!!

It's been a bit of a transition going from eating out just about every day to eating three square meals and 3 snacks. It's also been enlightening looking at calorie count and serving size on the boxes at the grocery store. I have been on diets before, but now with all the information on the packages, it's a real eye opener.

Exercise has also been something I found I have been able to work into my schedule. Good, long walks after supper are refreshing. My son has been going with me and pushing me to jog and sprint. He and I are both trying to exceed our goals we have set for ourselves.

Bolingbrook football coach John Ivlow is making his first appearance as a guest blogger on The Brook Blog.

I have had the privilege of playing for many wonderful coaches in my career. I found out that many of them were wonderful people as well.

When I first thought about getting into coaching, I often wondered about what "style" I would adopt. Would we instill a hard work ethic among my players like my high school coach Wayne DeSutter, would we stress the physical aspect as preached by my college coach Earle Bruce, or would we take the George Siefert approach and establish a democracy among players and coaches?

The honest answer is that I have taken ideas from all of them, as well as from some people who had nothing to do with football. We have made a "mold" for our football player which has been derived from the ideals and values of myself, my staff and people that I have met along the way.

There are "no exceptions to the expectation" of behavior that we have for our football players and football program. If players or coaches do not "buy in", they are simply removed from the program. I do not know if this is the "right" way or the "wrong" way, but it is the "Raider" way and hopefully some portion of this article will give you some ideas.

If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, take a look at the blog of Joliet Twp. football coach Jason Aubry.

The mission statement of the site is: "a blog to keep you updated on what is happening in our football program at Joliet Township." This week's entries include a post about linebacker Corey Gualandi being named District 212 player of the week and a photo of the V Light, which I assume is a tradition akin to flying the W flag at Wrigley Field.

"let's keep working to keep the V lit up!"

Aubry wrote this on Tuesday a few days after his team, which went winless in 2007, broke a 17-game losing streak with a win over St. Ignatius. So it's a tradition in the sense that the Steelmen do it every time they win, but not in the sense they do it very often.

The Bolingbrook Trojans youth football club will hold its homecoming pep rally Thursday Sept. 25 at Bolingbrook High School in the field house from 6:30 till approx 8 pm.

The Bolingbrook Raiders girls tennis team lost 7-0 to Lockport on Tuesday.

We had some strong performances though, which was not the case last year because there were no close matches.

At #1 doubles Ryann Woodfill and Sherie Phips played a close 7-6, 6-4 match. At #1 singles Celina Onyejiaka played a close 7-5, 6-1 match. And at #4 doubles Danielle Kramolisch and Shannon Riley played a close 6-3, 6-2 match. We continue to improve and are starting gain respect from our opponents and their coaches.

Bolingbrook 2, Lincoln-Way North 0

The Bolingbrook Soccer Team traveled to Lincoln Way North in a cross over SWSC conference match. The Raiders started the game flat but still managed to get several chances to score. The Raiders despite having several chances had not scored at the half way point 0-0. But Bolingbrook did not stay quit for long Alex Cruz found a streaking Arturo Cruz on a nice through ball who finished the ball back post for the first goal of the game 1-0. Arturo Cruz netted another goal later in the game when Patrick Bizimana was taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Arturo Cruz buried the ball back bar to push the game to 2-0. The Raiders peppered the goal all night long but could not get another goal past an outstanding Lincoln Way North Keeper who came up with save after save. Fransisco Luna record 3 saves in his 2nd shutout of the season. Arturo Cruz 2 Goals / Alex Cruz 1 Assist / Fransisco Luna 3 Saves - 2 Shutouts Overall Record 6-4-2 SWSC Record 2-1

The Bolingbrook Raiders girls volleyball team could lose junior Alexa Alfaro for the rest of the season, pending the results of a bone scan of the tibia in her left leg.

Alfaro told The Brook Blog that the injury happened playing softball when a line drive hit her left ankle. After an X-ray did not show any broken bones, Alfaro resumed training.

"It's been two months since the accident and I've been playing on it heavily, like volleyball all the time," she said on Monday night, resting both arms on crutches. "I kept feeling this pain. My ankle was just throbbing and I feel shin splints. I thought maybe I should get checked out by the trainer."

The trainer didn't like the look of a bump above Alfaro's ankle. The trainer (Gina Younce or Mattie Kaminskas, not sure which) referred Alfaro to a doctor who diagnosed "a minimum of a stress fracture, " and ordered the bone scan, which happened on Friday.

"I'm not positive about the stress fracture yet," Alfaro said. "I hoping it's not because I want to be out on the court with my team."

The Bolingbrook Raiders boys soccer team beat Young 3-0 in a consolation bracket game of the Pepsi Showdown on Saturday at the Lyons Soccer Complex in LaGrange.

Arturo Cruz had a goal and an assist to help the Raiders improve to 5-4-2 on the season.

Larkin and Loyola will play for the championship of the 32-team tournament on Oct. 5 at Toyota Park.

UPDATE: I stopped by my palatial imitation office on Monday and found a fax with more info about the game. As a word of caution to those with fax machines and a need to use them: your information will not get to The Brook Blog very fast. The Brook Blog is of, for and by the people, which means I don't have time to be harnessed to fax machines in offices. E-mail is the way to go.

The Bolingbrook Raiders took on Whitney Young @ Lyons in the Pepsi Showdown. The Raiders put a goal on the board in the 1st 5 minutes when Arturo Cruz followed a shot that the keeper mishandled and buried the miss touch by the keeper to put Bolingbrook up 1-0. Later in the 1st half the Raiders struck again with a through ball from Arturo Cruz to his brother Alex Cruz who split the defense and notched the 2nd goal back post to put the Raiders up 2-0 at the half. The Raiders continued the scoring in the second half with a long through ball from Jose Villareal who found Jim Faught streaking through the defense he chipped the goalie to push the lead to 3-0. The Raiders coasted to victory 3-0. Francisco Luna had 3 saves in Bolingbrook's 1st shutout of the season.

The Bolingbrook Raiders will not host a winless team for homecoming. Joliet Twp. beat St. Ignatius 28-24 on Saturday night, giving the Steelmen their first win of the season and putting an end to a 17-game losing streak.

Joliet had not won since the fourth week of the 2006 season when the Steelmen beat Stagg 14-13. Coach Jason Aubry had this to say about the victory.

"A victory any time is a tremendous thing," Aubry said. "Where we are at right now, we need the taste of a victory in our mouth."

Bolingbrook (4-0), which remained No. 6 in the Sun-Times Super 25 football rankings, has trounced Joliet the past three seasons. The Raiders won 44-8 last year, 15-0 in 2007 and 48-6 in 2006.

Because the Bolingbrook Raiders eventually woke up on Friday night and thrashed Lincoln-Way North 47-7 (feel free to read the live blog for my play by play descriptions), there wasn't much need for strategic questions with coach John Ivlow after the final whistle.

Anyone who's watched the Raiders play this year knows that in short-yardage situations, especially close to the end zone, Barry Wolff subs in at quarterback for Brad Geever. Wolff has scored touchdowns the last two weeks out of goal line sets, and it made me curious enough to ask coach Ivlow what gives?

"He's tough," Ivlow said. "He's a tough runner. He's a very tough runner. ...If you ever see like what Brad does, Brad does a nice job, but to be honest with you, Barry's probably a better perimeter runner than brad. He's more like a fullback. Barry has the ability to play linebacker, guard, fullback, quarterback. I mean, you can put him just about anywhere. He's just a tough kid."

Ivlow said the division of labor between Geever and Wolff is established in practice with Wolff running a distinct package of plays with the first team. On Friday night, Wolff got extended playing time with the first team and was able to run all the plays.

One of those plays in the second half resulted in a fumble when he and running back (Jamel Martin? John Seigler?) botched an option play. The running back thought Wolff was giving the ball to him, but Wolff pulled it out. (Update: Craig Lichtenwalter reported that it was Martin.)

Lincoln-Way North's Brian Wolfe grabbed the ball and ran for his team's lone touchdown.

"He's a very capable quarterback," Ivlow said. "He doesn't get all the reps. More importantly, he doesn't get all the reps withe the ones. So those meshes are with the twos and threes and fours, where as Brad in there all the time with Jemel and John getting those meshes down. That's why it's a little bit smoother I think."

Hello out there Raiders fans. Welcome to the first Friday Night Live! of the season. I will be giving you live updates of the football game tonight between undefeated and sixth-ranked Bolingbrook and a Lincoln-Way North team that is searching for the first win in program history. Don't be afraid to drop me a comment, ask a question or type gibberish at me.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. I will get started at 7 p.m.

Each week we are asking one of the Bolingbrook Raiders coaches to take the readers inside their heads. This week our guest blogger is boys golf coach Chuck Marik.

Tell if you have heard this one... "I hit the ball GREAT, but I just couldn't score well..." My guess is that if you have ever played golf you have definitely uttered this phrase. The question remains...How can you strike the ball so well but not shoot the score that you have always wanted?

The answer is simple. Too many golfers focus on hitting the ball 300 yards, striking crisp irons, or perfecting the putting stroke. What every golfer should be focusing on is the "ins and outs" of what it takes to think your way through 18 holes.

The average 18 hole round last 4-5 hours, and for any golfer, this is a test of endurance and focus, one that puts the mind to the ultimate battle of emotions vs. instincts. Trying to teach a high school golfer the importance of remaining calm and composed for this length of time, in my opinion, is the ultimate challenge to any golf coach.

In seven years as a high school golf coach, I have come to realize that the greatest challenge that I have is, "How do I convince a group of teenagers that the way that they think about the game, directly impacts their score."

Thomas Page is the manager of the 12U Bolingbrook Bandits travel baseball team. He is losing weight in order to raise money to fund his team through donations per pound lost. Page will try to lose 50 pounds between Friday and Jan. 22, 2009. His progress will be monitored with monthly photos in The Sun and weekly blog posts in The Brook Blog.

Welcome to the blog for Thomas Page's fundraiser for the Bolingbrook Bandits. I would like to take a moment and give you a little background about who I am and why I am doing this.

I have always had a love for baseball. I have played all through grade school, high school. I have three boys 11, 9 and 7 and have coached them since they have been able to play. Last year, I was given the opportunity to coach this travel team for Bolingbrook Bandits 11 U.

It was an awesome experience to say the least. We over came many hurdles and one of the main hurdles we needed to overcome was the financial one.

1. Bolingbrook Buccaneers vs. Thunder, Saturday at 7 p.m.

My good friend Bolingbrook Buccaneers Minor League Mailbox sent me an e-mail on Tuesday.

The Buccaneers have a big weekend coming up. They will be playing the 3 time Mid States Football League Champion on Saturday night at Joliet Memorial Stadium. TTheir will be Live Half Time entertainment and for all the kids under 10 walking through the gate will receive a free Dinner coupon for Old Country Buffet.

Don't even try to get a coupon in you're 11.

The Buccaneers game with the Steel was rained on on Sept. 13, which meant both teams got a tie. That improved Bolingbrook's record to 0-6-2.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students with I.D. and kids 11 and up (again the 10-year-olds rule) and senior citizens are $4. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tailgating is encouraged permitted.

The undefeated Bolingbrook Raiders (3-0) moved up three spots to No. 6 in this week's Sun-Times Super 25 football rankings.

The top five are Maine South, St. Rita, Naperville North, Wheaton Warrenville South and Lincoln-Way East.

While you must play one game at a time, blah, blah, blah, I don't play, so I can tell you that the only ranked teams remaining on the Bolingbrook schedule are Oct. 3 at No. 18 Lincoln-Way Central and Oct. 10 at No. 5 Lincoln-Way East. Not that any of that matters once the playoffs start.

So if you were there on Friday night and witnessed the Bolingbrook Raiders pull off their amazing 29-21 win over Morgan Park, then your clothes are probably in a soaking wet ball on the bathroom floor.

I'm not saying it rained a lot last night, but anyone not wearing either a wet suit or a lot of sponges was drastically underdressed.

The conditions that game were played in took it beyond classic, not that the play alone wasn't enough. Such a great game. So many great plays.

Everyone should take a second to thank the people that decided to purchase that Field Turf surface. Without the fake grass, that game would have been a mess.

But let's move on.

According to the basketball recruiting Web site Chicagohoops.com, Bolingbrook Raiders senior Troy Snyder committed to play his college basketball at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Snyder told ChicagoHoops.com that he loved both the facilities at Wisconsin-Green Bay, and also the players. He went on to note that UWGB was "My type of place."

Snyder currently see's his ability to score the basketball as the strongest part of his game, and he is very much looking forward to the coming high school season at Bolingbrook.

This year, Bolingbrook figures to rank among the top teams in the state of Illinois with a star-studded lineup of players that includes both Snyder, and also Wisconsin-bound Class of 2009 star Diamond Taylor, who has transferred in from St. Joseph.

The Bolingbrook Golf Club will hold its 2008 club championship on Saturday.

Teeing off at 6:30 a.m., the event features players that have a verifiable USGA handicap index. The championship flight is limited to players with handicaps between 0 and 9.

Check back at The Brook Blog for all the winners.

IMSA diving coach Vicki Morrow reports that Bolingbrook residents and IMSA sophomores Amber Farrell and Brielle James won junior varsity competitions against Lemont and Bartlett, respectively, to open the season.

Farrell won against Lemont with a score of 102.55 while James won against Bartlett with a score of 93.05.

At the varsity level, another Bolingbrook resident, junior Danielle Strickland, placed third in both meets scoring over 25 points more than her best score from 2007.

The Bolingbrook Raiders are ranked No. 9 in this week's Chicago Sun-Times Super 25 football rankings, up from No. 10 last week.

9. Bolingbrook (2-0) 10

The Mustangs opened the year with a 24-20 loss to Brother Rice, but beat Richards 48-21 on Friday night. Richards was 11-1 last season and a quarterfinalist in Class 6A.

BLUE ISLAND -- Eisenhower head coach Travis Moore got a kick out of seeing Bolingbrook assistant coach Kyle Jakubek on the opposing sideline on Friday night.

Moore said seeing his fellow Northern Illinois alumnus told him all he needed to know about how the Bolingbrook Raiders would play.

"I smiled because I knew his players would be a refelection of him and he knew my players would be a reflection of me," Moore said.

It's good that we have this time to get to know each other while the wheels figure out how to get rolling. My name is Sean, and I'm a recovering sports journalist.

Hello Sean!

You guys surely know how to make a fella feel welcome. And it's only proper that I let you in off The Brook Blog's porch and through the screen door of this new and exciting venture. The Bolingbrook Sun is changing things up on Sept. 19 and delivering a new product that is more revlevant and more compelling.

What that means for us sports heads is this: what will be, will be in the print edition, and what was today will be on our Web site today and not at the end of the week. There's more to it than that, but that's a good jumping off point.
