Thumbnail image for danahey2 copy.jpgNOTE: In a revival of this "classic" Friday feature, Courier-News reporter Mike Danahey guesses how much beer (or other beverage of choice) it might take him to pay money to see a recently-released movie. His opinions are based on trailers, ads and advance hype.

Here are some of the movies playing this weekend...

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

This movie is a follow-up to "Journey to the Center of the Earth." The second Journey album came out in 1976 and was called "Into the Future." No one remembers it either.

Beer rating: A 12-pack of Anchor Steam, the San Francisco treat.

Safe House, The Vow, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 3D, after the jump.

Safe House

Denzel Washington has been playing the same character he plays here 1,000 times, a menacing guy who is smarter than everybody else and who can kill you in 3.2 seconds. He and that other overacting genius, Al Pacino, should do a movie together. Maybe a musical comedy. Set in a pork plant.

Beer rating: A case of Hamm's.

The Vow

A wife gets amnesia. That's all I need to know about this movie.

Beer rating: Let's take a road trip to Amnesia Brewing in Portland.

Star Wars: The Phanton Menace 3D

Fanboys will be putting on clean pairs of Star Wars underoos go to see what new toys George Lucas has used to tinker once more with his trilogy. If only there were a way to turn off the horrendous dialogue track, the rest of us might consider see it too.

Beer rating: A lot of Dark Lord Imperial Stout.

WHAT?! You were looking for a REAL movie review? Our Sun-Times Media colleague Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times does a swell job at that.
