You wouldn't know it from the weather, though. Temperatures across the Chicago area already hit 97 degrees in May. And Monday brought us the first of what could be three straight days of high temperatures in the 90s.

(Read more in today's The Courier-News: "Sticky Chicago sees first of forecast three straight days in the 90s.")

If you, like me, are built better for Chicago winters than Chicago summers, here are a few tips to stay cool from the McHenry County Department of Health:

Always wear light-weight clothing that has plenty of ventilation (the fabric should "breathe").

Stay well hydrated (consume an abundance of liquids in the summer).

Exercise or schedule other strenuous activities when the heat and humidity are lowest (early morning and late evenings).

Rest in cool, shady places frequently. If you're hot, go cool down - get indoors, drink cool liquids, enjoy the air conditioning for a few minutes or take a cold shower.

Watch out for those at greatest risk - very young children, persons with health conditions like the elderly, pets. Certain medications may put you at greater risk of heat-related illnesses, so be aware of how medications may interact with the heat.

Visit a cooling center. McHenry County's cooling center at the Illinois Health & Human Services Building, 2215 Lake Shore Drive, Woodstock (815-338-0234).

Share your tips to beat the heat, learn risk factors to watch out for in the heat, after the jump.

During periods of extreme heat and humidity, the McHenry County Department of Health also warned residents should be on the lookout for these potential risk factors:

Dehydration: Dehydration occurs when more water leaves the body than you put back in. Stay well hydrated throughout the day and drink extra fluids when exercising or simply being outdoors on hot days.

Heat exhaustion: Symptoms may include: headaches, weak pulse, rapid pulse, excessive sweating, dizziness, and in some instances fainting, clammy skin, chills, cold, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps or very fast or very shallow breathing. If you suspect you have heat exhaustion, take action immediately to cool down. If possible, immerse yourself in cool water.

Heat stroke: Unlike heat exhaustion, victims of heat stroke have warm skin that is dry to the touch because they've sweated out all their extra water leaving the body's natural cooling system without a key cool-down mechanism. High fever, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, and a strong, rapid pulse all accompany heat stroke. Victims may become confused and can lose consciousness. Heat stroke is a very serious condition. Cool the victim; seek medical assistance.

What are you doing to beat the heat? Share your tips in the comments, or email stories and photos to emcfarlan@stmedianetwork.com.

The Plato Center resident will travel to Kenya, where he was born, at the end of the month to complete his late father's vision: Bringing a clean water source to his village. Work on the water-supplying borehole started last spring with support from several Quad Cities churches and Onesimus' mother's mission organization, Child Arise Kenya. The completed project, called Living Waters Borehole, will bring clean water to 5,000 people.

Onesimus' story appeared in Sunday's Courier. You can read the full story here on our website: "One man's summer vacation of a lifetime."

Brittany was one of nine South Elgin High School seniors who took part in a reenactment of an alcohol-related car accident late last month in the school's outdoor stadium, part of an assembly about the dangers of drinking and driving on prom night.

The assembly had been a "blur," said Brittany, who had played dead during the reenactment, stretched across the hood of one of two smashed cars.

"I couldn't open my eyes. I could just hear things. I was moving, I was moving and then I was in a body bag," she said.

Afterward, the seniors peeled off fake flesh and prom attire in the high school dressing room as they dressed for the rest of the school day. They talked about the upcoming South Elgin prom, held this Saturday at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center, about graduation, about their last days spent together as a class - no less of a blur than the morning assembly had been.

"(Prom) is a lot of fun, but you have to be willing to spend money on it," said Mike Favia, 18, Bartlett.

He said he'd pay at least $300 for prom, including $150 for a pair of tickets and about $100 for a tuxedo rental, with a blue tie to match his date's dress - "a big thing here." If he wants to go in on a "party bus" with friends, he said, that will be another $100. And that's not to mention what he'll pay for a trip with classmates to the Wisconsin Dells the day after prom.

South Elgin Principal Melanie Meidel put that number closer to $500.

That's still pretty conservative compared to the average price nationwide a couple will pay for prom this year: $1,078, according to a survey of about 700 readers of Seventeen Prom and TeenPROM magazines last year and additional research by USA TODAY. Most of that will go toward the prom dress ($231) and rented tux ($127, plus another $100 for a tie, cummerbund and shoes).

Micalena Mikhail, 18, of South Elgin said she spent about $500 on her dress -- "I didn't have to get alterations, though."

"You just want to feel special," Micalena said.

And Brittany said, "When you look back at your high school photos, you want to look good."

That cost is one of many things Meidel said has "changed a lot" about prom since she was a senior attending the event in her high school gym. And that's something that's the same across all of the Fox Valley, echoed by residents who attended prom 34, 47 years ago.

For their memories of proms past, read this past weekend's Storyteller, No matter the year or circumstances, prom brings night to remember.

Does the biggest cheating scandal in American history, uncovered last year, have you worried teachers are cheating on student test scores in your schools?

That scandal was exposed in 2011, after The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's analyzed standardized test scores in Atlanta schools. That led to findings of widespread cheating in Atlanta schools and a state investigation in Georgia. Investigators then put the finger on about 180 teachers and administrators, some of whom confessed to altering test papers, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

This weekend, The Atlanta Journal Constitution did it again, collecting and analyzing standardized test scores not just for Atlanta schools, but for 69,000 public schools across the country. The whole thing is fascinating, and it uncovered test scores in hundreds of cities that followed a pattern that, in Atlanta, had indicated cheating in multiple schools.

You can search the newspaper's database of school districts' test-score shifts here, but I'm guessing there mostly are two school districts in whose results you are interested: Elgin School District U46 and Community Unit School District 300.

So should you be worried about your schools cheating on their standardized test scores? Find out, after the jump!

Probably not.

This database shows the percentage of classes in each school district flagged with a test-score shift outside the norm over a four-year period. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

In any year, a typical (non-cheating) district might expect to have about 5 percent of its classes flagged for unusually high or low performance relative to their performances in the previous year. Districts which consistently have 10 percent or more of their classes flagged or which have an extremely high flag rate in a particular year certainly deserve further examination.

In District 300, those percentages were:

6.25 percent in 2008

2.78 in 2009

1.35 in 2010

4.65 in 2011

All are close to 5 percent. None hit 10. Nothing alarming there.

In U46, those percentages were:

10.16 percent in 2008

8.2 in 2009

7.45 in 2010

7.57 in 2011

The Elgin school district hit 10 percent. But just once. Not consistently. There probably is nothing alarming there.

But, as with anything else, if you hear or see anything suspicious regarding test-taking at your school, let me know. You can reach me at emcfarlan@stmedianetwork.com.

A movie version/update of a silly late-80s TV show about cops who go undercover as high school students. It looks goofy enough that if I have enough beers one night I might rent if off Netflix. Heading out to the cineplex, not so much.

Beer rating: Much light beer. But that gives me a headache.

A 30-year-old who lives in his mom's basement -- a census tract becomes a movie and a cautionary tale for all those whiny 20-somethings still mooching off their parents or hanging out in tents at Occupy Anywhere But The Town Of Our Beloved Benevolent Robber Baron Icon Steve Jobs.

Beer rating: A lot of Big Flats 1901, that cheap beer from Walgreens.

Casa de mi Padre

Will Ferrell stars in a parody of Mexican TV soap operas, filmed in Spanish. Again, a movie I might rent, but probably fall asleep during as the premise grows tiresome.

Beer rating: A 12-pack of Corona and three limes.

Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze, the motorcycle-riding fire face who collects debts for the devil. It wasn't available for critics in advance. You'd think they would put out better movies in February. It's usually cold, and there's not much else to do. Maybe it's a conspiracy to get more people to go bowling.

This looks bad. Apparently it's about a love triangle between Reese Witherspoon and metrosexuals Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, who all play characters who work for the CIA. My guess is real spies look more like me than anyone here because spies should blend in, right? If you're young and hot, unless you're spying in nightclubs, it's not gonna work. Unless maybe all nightclubs the world over are indeed filled with secret agents.

Denzel Washington has been playing the same character he plays here 1,000 times, a menacing guy who is smarter than everybody else and who can kill you in 3.2 seconds. He and that other overacting genius, Al Pacino, should do a movie together. Maybe a musical comedy. Set in a pork plant.

Both were eerily dreamy, which is nothing new for a Cirque show ("Quidam" dates back to 1996,) but sort of surprising, still, as this one bill's itself as "a young girl's escape into the world of imagination."

Zoe's imagination is not filled with puppy dogs and cotton candy, nor is Justin Bieber anywhere to be found in her cranium, as she's apparently from a time before kids had YouTube, i-Product and fast food to keep them occupied.

Guided by a Cirque kind of ringmaster, her trip down the rabbit hole -- or, in this case, onto a huge revolving stage - is filled with acrobats of all sorts, some more nightmarish than whimsical, and comic bits hearkening back to Charlie Chaplin that pull people from the audience (who may or may not be planted there).

The rest of Danahey's review, after the jump.

Aerial contortionist Isabelle Vaudelle was macabre, grappling with red silk hanging from the ceiling in a vertical dance with death. Yves Decoste and Valentyna Sidenko melded their bodies as one marble white statue, striking poses in quasi-religious shapes, at one time seeming like a human Brigid's Cross.

At one point, ghosts hovered above the crowd, fabric mimicking blood dripping from them, and soap bubbles part of the scary scenario, too.

There are several scenes with performers dressed in white lab or hazmat suits.

And the titular character is a headless man carrying and umbrella and a bowler, who looks like he stepped out of a Magritte painting.

Still, there are moments that lighten the mood, including the aforementioned old school shtick, yo-yos, rope skipping and juggling.

For a clumsy beluga like me, most impressive were acts near the beginning and end of the show, which is staged to feel intimate the mid-sized venue.

Cory Sylvester made like a human coin, spinning and maneuvering inside a German Wheel. Dressed like ghosts of newsboys or Depression Era factory workers, a troupe of 15 Russian acrobats performed a banquine, flipping in unison and forming moving human pyramids.

Least impressive: People who still don't get that no one needs to be bothered by smartphones being used for any purpose during a performance. If only the one near me could have been forced into the Spanish web act, ropes looped around her waist and ankles, the lights dimmed as she spun about until her bright screens crashed and splattered on the stage below.

But that's my imagination, not Zoe's. Instead, I just told the girl to turn it off or I would go get an usher.

(Although, one public commenter did question whether Superintendent Jose Torres' recent trip to China had been taxpayer-funded. Answer: Here, in today's cover story, "U46 schools chief gathers food for thought during trip to China.")

Lest you think your comments fell on deaf ears, girls... Or were you left wanting to learn more about AVID, grown-ups... I wrote at length about the program last school year. That article no longer is available online, so I've posted it, in full, after the jump.

Program creating ' AVID' learners
Average students getting collegepreparation through class
The Courier-News
Thursday, September 9, 2010
By Emily McFarlan, emcfarlan@stmedianetwork.com

CARPENTERSVILLE - During a recent sophomore AVID elective class at Dundee-Crown High School, the students were the ones standing at the chalkboards and whiteboards, chalk and dry-erase markers in hand.

Around the classroom in small groups, students were the ones asking the questions, too.

And it was students - working together - who were finding the answers.

It's called a tutorial. And it's a "mainstay" of the AVID system, which targets students in the academic middle and focuses them on college as early as sixth grade, according to Dundee-Crown coordinator Richard Bogue.

This is the third year AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination - has been offered in Community Unit School District 300, and the second year in Elgin School District U46. This is the year the Carpentersville-based district will begin comparing standardized test scores of students both in and outside the college preparatory program, and the first time AVID students will see ACT scores.

But even without that data, students, teachers and administrators in both school districts said anecdotally the program is helping participants' grades, test scores and - perhaps most importantly - confidence.

"The kids we've had the whole time, they're making the grade," Bogue said.

In AVID, "We take kids who would not be accelerated and we start accelerating them," said Tom Hay, District 300 associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

Wide-ranging help

Those students take an AVID elective class, where they discuss what they're learning in student-led "Socratic" seminars, find answers to homework and standardized test questions in tutorials, and are taught organizational skills they can apply in all their classes. They enroll in honors and AP (advanced placement) courses. They meet with counselors to set personal goals and plan fundraisers for field trips to visit colleges.

"It's really helpful," said Nancy Conejo, 15, of Carpentersville. "A lot of people complain, but at the end of the year, they have the skills to help them. It will help them in life."

Now a sophomore, she has been with program since the beginning. She was recommended by a teacher as an eighth-grader at Carpentersville Middle School in the 2008-09 school year.

"When they explained to me it was about college, I wanted to take the opportunity to go to college," she said.

Neither of her parents went to college, and it wasn't something she was thinking about at the time. Her older sister may become the first in her family to go, but said she hasn't had the same opportunities for scholarships that Conejo has had.

Conejo was excited to get a brochure in the mail from DePaul University in Chicago after visiting the school with her class, although she hasn't decided yet where she wants to go or what she wants to be.

"I'm into helping people," she said. "I like helping with little kids. I like when people ask me to help and rely on me."

Expanding program

About 150 students are in the AVID program at Dundee-Crown, and 709 in grades six to 11 across District 300, according to Hay. That's expanded from an initial enrollment of 350 students in grades seven, eight and nine in the district.

Many of the juniors in teacher Dianne Kraus' AVID elective were testing below their grade level on the EXPLORE test when they entered high school, Kraus said. According to the results of the ninth-grade PLAN test, almost all those students now are making the grade, she said.

Both tests are part of the ACT testing system, predictors of how students will do on the college entrance exam, and many of her students are testing at ACT levels, Kraus said.

And, Hay added, "They're getting stronger every year."

That's notable, as school districts 300 and U46 both have expressed disappointment with the average composite ACT scores by the current senior class, announced last month. Both remained unchanged from the year before - 19.6 in U46 and 20.4 in District 300, of a possible 36. And both are below the state (20.7) and national (21) averages, and the districts' goals.

The Carpentersville district is starting to take some of the best practices it has learned from AVID and push those out across all its classrooms - even those that aren't part of the program, Hay said. And some U46 schools are incorporating AVID organizational practices, such as Cornell note-taking, into their strategic plans, according to Greg Walker, associate superintendent for secondary education in the Elgin district.

In U46, AVID has expanded from the first years of middle and high schools last year to seventh to 10th grade this year at all middle and high schools in the Elgin school district. That puts a total of 1,192 students in the district's program.

Principal Al Tamburino at Kimball Middle School in Elgin said about 110 students are enrolled in it at his school. And while the district is "still learning about the program," he said, one clear benefit has emerged.

"I think the biggest thing we see is the confidence in the kids," he said.

Conejo took the PLAN test last year as a freshman. She'll find out her scores this year, but she said she knows the preparation she got in AVID already has helped.

"It made me feel better, more confident in myself," she said.

Here are some of the movies playing this weekend...

We Bought a Zoo

Oh, no, you didn't. Who the heck would buy a zoo? Really small zoos are just depressing roadside attractions. But this is a Cameron Crowe film, and he so wants to be Frank Capra, you just know this will be a sweet, gooey mess.

Beer rating: A lot of Hamm's, the beer of bears.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, War Horse, after the jump.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

A couple friends of mine posited the essential question about this movie: Why was it made in the first place? The first version is only three years old. Sure, it's in Swedish, but it really wasn't that hard to follow. This one has Daniel Craig not even attempting an accent, but pretty much everyone else does.

Beer rating: Lots of Carlsberg. I know -- that's Danish. But they own the biggest plant in Sweden, too.

War Horse

Even though the bit was about the play based on the same material, the SNL skit pretty much about War Horse pretty much ruined it for me. The best quips I read about it called this the best picture of the year, the year being 1942, while another called it "Saving Private Ryan" meets "The Black Stallion." Plus, it's 150 minutes long.

Beer rating: There's actually a War Horse Brewing Company in Seneca Lake, N.Y. Road trip?

Here are some of the movies playing this weekend...

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Brad Bird, who is best know for directing animated hits, takes helm of the fourth M.I. movie, which is fitting because Tom Cruise is a real-life cartoon character and movies like this might as well be silent films. Really loud silent movies because today's audiences expect nothing less than to be wowed and hit over the head with the latest in special effects. I have yet to see one of these movies, even on TV.

Beer rating: This is more of a Red Bull and vodka kind of flick.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, after the jump.

I did see the first in the Guy Ritchie-directed version of the iconic Victorian detective stories on Netflix and found it an oddly amusing, super hyper, tongue-in-cheek mess set in a different era to freshen up 80s action movie cliches. They didn't even bother to use period music, which would bore modern audiences who demand things be loud and fast. I expect this will be pretty much the same.

Beer rating: This is more of a Red Bull and Jaegermeister movie.
