Of the eight classes in the state playoffs, none has a richer tradition than the Class 4A bracket when it comes to total number of state championships.
The 32 teams in the Class 4A bracket have combined to win 31 state titles since Illinois began its current playoff format in 1974. Hampshire and Genoa-Kingston, who square off in the first round Friday, helped bolster that total.
The Whip-Purs have three state championships in program history. They won the Class 1A crown in 1976 and 1979 and captured the Class 2A championship in 1995. Meanwhile, the Cogs were Class 1A state champions in 1977.
State powerhouse Driscoll helps skew the title count for Class 4A teams. The Highlanders own eight state championships and will be shooting for their eighth consecutive state title this season.
