Nasty weather led to some sparse crowds during the first two days at the Elgin Holiday Tournament, but a few notable faces formerly tied to Elgin's hoops program were seen in the crowd the past few nights at Chesbrough Field House.

St. Charles North moves to top -- Having not played in 13 days probably doesn't help St. Charles North (7-2) as it prepares for the Dundee-Crown Tournament.

But it does help them jump to No. 1 in this week's rankings, up two spots from last week.

The Hampshire boys basketball team will be without junior starting point guard Justin Bieber for an undetermined amount of time. People close to the program said he's out with a foot injury, though it's not considered to be serious. Bieber was on the bench and in street clothes during Hampshire's 59-49 win over Genoa-Kingston on Thursday night.

The Bears are unlikely to make the playoffs, but the Packers are certain to miss them. It's been a rough season in Green Bay, and I don't know if this makes it better or worse.

With the Bulls now led by hot-shot rookie Derrick Rose and entering Tuesday's game with a decent 11-12 record against what has been a difficult schedule, it has been easy to be positive about what lies ahead for the team. That is, until Tuesday night.

Burlington Central coach Chris Payne said before the start of the boys basketball season that he hoped his young team would be rounding into form near Christmas.

With Christmas almost here, it appears the Rockets are close to their coach's schedule.

It's a funny thing when two guys that were traded for each other at one time both end up being free agents at the same time.

That's the case right now as Juan Uribe and Aaron Miles are both free to shop their services around to any baseball team willing to write them paychecks.

HAMPSHIRE -- To be honest, there really wasn't anything funny about Friday night's girls basketball matchup between local rivals Burlington Central and Hampshire.

But it would be fair to say that the contest certainly turned out to be a laugher.

Hampshire, the reigning Big Northern Conference East Division champion, opened its defense of the crown with a resounding 48-31 victory.

The other day I said the Bears would lose to the Saints on Thursday night. I was wrong, so it's time to eat some crow.

But...

Last night, South Elgin survived a late scare to beat Larkin 65-62 in an Upstate Eight boys basketball game. Watch the highlights here.

It's going to be winter in Chicago on Sunday when the Bears host the Jaguars. That may give the Bears an edge, but I don't know. It looks to me like the Jags have pretty much quit, so an assist from the weather might not be necessary.

Speaking of someone who should have quit....

Not only is this guy watching a Bears game in the snow, but he's wearing a Cade McNown jersey.

That towel -- or whatever it is he's swinging around -- was probably frozen solid after catching all of his tears.

Analysis of a baseball trade generally centers around assessing the winner and loser in a particular swap. But with the White Sox shipping Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan to the Braves for prospects, both teams look like they'll come out ahead.

With baseball's winter meetings starting next week and the arbitration deadline here and gone, action on the free-agent market should pick up soon.

Is it time to panic if the Cubs or White Sox miss out on their top free agent targets? Hardly.

Sectional basketball action will be coming to two gyms near you at the end of the boys basketball season.

When the high school basketball season ends in March, last week's Thanksgiving tournaments will be little more than an afterthought.

However, it never hurts to get off to a good start, and three area teams are hoping to use their early-season success as a springboard to bigger and better things down the road.

South Elgin, Dundee-Crown and Westminster Christian all claimed Thanksgiving Tournament titles, and all three can be deemed surprises, although to varying degrees.

Notre Dame's football season came to an unmerciful end Saturday when the Irish were blasted by USC, putting an ugly cap on a generally ugly season.

Naturally, there's lots of speculation on whether Notre Dame will send coach Charlie Weis packing, despite the years and dollars still left on his contract.
