National signing day is upon us and St. Charles East touts a number of talented athletes who are prepared to compete on the collegiate level at notable institutions.
Decorated track athlete Liz Hynes, football standouts Pat Friel and Wes Allen and soccer player Cesar Morales will all formally make their college commitments during a series of signing ceremonies Wednesday afternoon.
Hynes, who has six state track medals to her name, will sign to run at Boston College next year. The Eagles had nine individuals advance to the NCAA East Regional Championship last spring.
The long-distance specialist also starred for the Saints' cross-country team the past four years, helping lift East to a third-place finish at the Class 3A State Finals last fall.
Allen was the area's leading rusher in 2008 and a three-time Courier News All-Area football team member. He will commit to play at Division II Truman State in Kirksville, Mo.
Allen amassed 4,323 yards and 60 touchdowns during his three varsity seasons for East. He'll join a Bulldogs squad that finished 4-7 last year.
Friel, who was twice a member of the Courier News All-Area team, is slated to sign with Colgate. The Division I-A Raiders finished 9-3 last season and were a perfect 5-0 in the Patriot League.
Lastly, Morales will sign to play soccer at UCLA. The Bruins finished 10-5-6 last year. UCLA has four won four men's soccer national championships in program history.
