At one time, the Hound ran away to join the Burke & Walsh Circus with Corky, he of "Circus Boy" fame.
The Hound's mother said: "Write if you get work." The Hound thought twice about it and instead joined the flying circus we call the newsbiz. Such is life.
Corky and his pal Bimbo the elephant won't be at the Carson and Barnes Circus in Grayslake today and Tuesday, although the PETA folks are upset that elephant prods allegedly are used on the circus' pachyderms. If we had to direct a two-ton beast, we'd probably would use a prod. Bimbo didn't seem to mind. Elephants we've seen in Thailand didn't seem to mind.
If they made that complaint when the Burke & Walsh Circus was traveling the backroads, boss Big Tim Champion might yell: "Hey, rube!" And you know what that means.
