Frightening foods

The Hound figured Six Flags Great America in Gurnee would come up with some sort of eating torture for this year's Fright Fest, considering the success of last year's offering of munching on giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches. But what they've come up with surely isn't a blue-plate special.

This year, guests for the 17th annual scary festival which runs weekends from Oct. 6 to Oct. 28, will have the dining experience of the "Wheel of Fright." Yup, you guessed it, spin the wheel and you get to feast on wax worms, night crawlers, crickets, Rocky Mountain oysters (you DO know what those are, right?) or jalapeno peppers. Folks, Vanna White ain't spinning this wheel!

Now The Hound has eaten his share of unappetizing food over the years, but don't expect him to lineup for the chance of a gourmet slice of a wax worm. Ugh! Hissing cockroaches sound more appetizing than wax worms.

Plus, taking a page from NBC's gone, but not forgotten, "Fear Factor", Six Flags will have "The Coffin of Fear " where park goers can share a crystal coffin with 10,000 mealworm larvae. If you don't upchuck and can make it through the ordeal, you win an '08 Six Flags pass, which is worth some bucks.

So, fellow gourmands, start licking your chops for a buffet feast the likes of which Lake County has never seen. Bon appetit!
