The Hound just realized that filing for the Feb. 5, 2008 Republican presidential primary begins Thursday --- not that dogs can vote, although they should, don't you think?
If dogs voted, they'd vote for the animal friendly candidate. Guess that means Michael Vick would never get dogs' votes.
Anyway, Lake County Republicans have been eyeing this primary date, which is about a month after Democrats began scurrying for signatures for delegate slates (this is what happens when you move the primary date from the third week in March to the first week in February). Why the descrepancy in dates is beyond a dog's brain, considering that Democrats file their presidential candidates and slates Oct. 29 and Republicans on Nov. 28. At least that's how The Hound reads the State Board of Elections elections calendar.
Which brings this dog to wonder what's going on among the Republicans. Most Democrats of presidential timber are expected to ignore Illinois, leaving Sens. Clinton and Obama to battle over the Land of Lincoln's delegate-rich caucus. Republicans though, appear to be a different matter.
Already, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (note to Rudy's handers: Lose the Rudy. Not presidential, nope. Try Rudolph. After all, he's running for president, not thistle commissioner.) has garnered lots of Republican county chairman, including Lake County's own Daniel Venturi, who is Lake Villa Township supervisor, where the votes are.
Does this mean Rudy is more popular than Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson in the Prairie State? No, but so far he appears to have better organizational skills. He's also wrapped up a few state representatives, including Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross, who is his state chairman. Plus, his state campaign headquarters is in DuPage County. They always vote Republican there.
Besides, how can you not like a guy who has a tame wild turkey named for him roaming Riverside Park in Manhattan?
