The following must mean the apocalypse is nearer than we think: At this point in the National Football League It is the first time since 1984 that the National Football League has teams with 11-0 and 0-11 records. Everybody knows what happened in 1984, right? Ronald Reagan was re-elected in a landslide.

Right now, the New England Patriots are 11-0, while the hapless Miami Dolphins are 0-11. Both are AFC teams, so this, too, must have some meaning. The Hound next will probe the entrails of some animal which became roadkill to find out what all this means.

Back in '84, Miami was 11-0 with the team led by Dan Marino on its way to a Super Bowl rendevous, while the Buffalo Bills were 0-11. Both, once again were, AFC teams. There obviously is a trend here. In 1942, The Hound has been told, another instance of 11-0/0-11 teams existed. Our Bears were 11-0 in that war year, while the Detroit Lions were 0-11.

So what does this indicate in the grand scheme of things? A Republican presidential victory in the offiing? Parity in the NFL? On any given Sunday? Or just a mathematical and physical oddity?

The Hound doesn't know, even after sniffing that roadkill, but a bookie says Miami is favored slightly on Sunday over the New York Jets. Don't bet the dog house.
