It's been a week since the death of 16 horses following the crash in Wadsworth of the double-decker trailer carrying Belgian draft horses from Indiana ostensibly to an auction in Minnesota. It looks like the 43 survivors extricated from the wreckage will be spared whatever fate they were headed for at the time of the accident.
Thanks to horse rescuers and the Carney Stables in Wadsworth, the surviving steeds appear to be headed for adoption first by those who helped in saving the horses. According to officials with the Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society based in the Barrington area, the insurance company involved wants to lead the horses to good homes and not the slaughterhouse, where many equine folks believe they were headed. The group's Web site, www.harpsonline.org, has information about the adoption procedure.
The surviving horses certainly don't know how lucky they were to be in such a horrific accident in the Wadsworth area, where firefighters have been trained in equine rescue, where there are horse folk who care, where there are veterinarians ready to answer the call for an animal in need. But we do.
