Veterans Day - The News Hound

Veterans Day

If you haven't thanked a veteran yet, you've still got most of today to find one. Yes, it is Veterans Day, and that is Veterans without the apostrophe because it is not a day that "belongs" to veterans. It is a day for honoring all veterans.

Or as, one Mundelein resident said she told a veteran she went to grade and high school with:

"I just thought I'd write and say thank you. What's the saying, a day late and a dollar short? No, better late than never. Looking back it seems like we should have all supported the guys who went into the service . The stress and uncertainty must have been very hard on anyone in the military. And now here all these years later I see things that should have been done. I think anyone who has had to put a life on hold --- on-demand --- deserves recognition."

The Hound couldn't say it any better, except for the following he was told about, supposedly scrawled by a grunt on the side of C-ration case during the height of the Vietnam War at a firebase up near the DMZ: "To those who fight for it, life has a flavor the protected never know."

If that doesn't give you chills, nothing will.

Salute a vet today, will you?

Hey, how 'bout us girls?

You're welcome. It was an honor to serve.

THE HOUND SEZ: Good point. And thanks.
