Bears down

It's a sad day when the Monsters of the Midway get relegated to a low-power UHF station which is what happens tonight when the Bears square off against the Washington Redskins --- if you don't have the NFL Network at your dog house. Where, oh, where sports fans, has this season gone except south?

From the lofty days of a year ago when the Bears were Super Bowl bound to doormats. How could this happen? What has gone wrong?

It's so easy to blame Rex Grossman, who now likens the Bears' offense to that of the Phoenix Suns. That would be a good comparison, but the Suns play professional basketball, not football. The poor boy must be addled after being hit so many times and dropping the pigskin that he's confused about what sport he gets paid to play.

At this point, Rex should be playing basketball because he, along with the rest of the Bears, are playing for pride, contract incentives and a roster spot next year. Their chances for a playoff spot left town along with the Alberta Clipper that buzzed through here and dumped about 10 inches of snow on Halas Hall in Lake Forest.

When do pitchers and catchers report to spring training? Not soon enough, not soon enough.
