The Hound has thought long and hard over the dilemma area duffers will find themselves in next spring when they go to Orchard Hills Golf Course and find it has morphed into soccer fields. There's only one thing to do: Turn to Frisbee golf.
While some had hoped against hope the Waukegan Park District commissioners on Thursday were going to reverse their earlier decision to close the 82-year old venue, what they did was close the clubhouse immediately, sending fish fry aficionadoes into withdrawal for their weekly delicacies.
The clubhouse at Orchard Hills was essentially closed for the season, the bar and restaurant was only scheduled to be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the winter season. A motion was passed 4-1 Thursday to permanently cease all Orchard Hills Golf Course and clubhouse operations, effective immediately and proceed with issuing a severance package to the terminated employees.
One park district official described the bar and restaurant as having " the flavor of a northwood’s tavern. It had good food and friendly atmosphere!” As an up north gourmand The Hound knows says about supper club fish fries: "Fried fish is fried fish. There's no gettin' around it."
But there's bigger fish to fry here.
Hackers should be heading to the Frisbee golf course in Bevier Park to take up a less-stressful game of golf. And, it's FREE! No need for $20 green fees, expensive clubs and replacing lost balls. All Frisbee duffers need is a Frisbee. Some don't even need clothes --- damn hippies.
So, Orchard Hills lamenters, don't be sad. Buy a Frisbee and be happy as you toss the saucer into the baskets.
Speaking of baskets, which is what fried fish usually comes in at only the best Friday fish fries, The Hound is taking reservations for what you think are Lake County's top fish fries. The Hound knows what he likes --- kibble --- so he's not that familiar with fish fries. Help a dog out.
