Perhaps the bipartisan warning by congressional representatives Mark Kirk and Melissa Bean will kick start the mass transit impasse in Springfield. Either that or the region is in line to lose megamillions in grant money from Uncle Sugar.
Highland Park Republican Kirk and Barrington Democrat Bean both noted the other day that without a capital budget bill for the state, federal funds secured by the state's congressional delegation may go elsewhere --- like states not in the grips of political gridlock. That would be Democratic political gridlock for Democrats control both legislative houses and the Governor's Mansion, not that hockey puck Blagojevich stays there much.
Why Illinois political leaders cannot reach a successful conclusion on this issue is beyond ordinary expectations. People get more done at square-dancing clubs than what has occurred in Springfield. And nobody seems to care.
We just keep stumbling along hoping Santa Claus will deliver a big package all wrapped up with a tidy bow and inside will be money for roads, schools and mass transit.
Don't expect any more than coal in your stockings if you expect the state's so-called leaders to deliver the goods.
