If you read that nice and colorful ad in The News-Sun from the Waukegan Park District about the closing of Orchard Hills Golf Course, you may have been struck, as The Hound was, by one of the items spelled out. It had to do with loss control.
For those who missed the ad or refused to believe it or just ignored it because the information didn't square with their versions of the rumors and innuendoes swirling around the controversial Orchard Hills closure, here's what jumped out at The Hound:
"There was a quick reconsi deration of a decision to close the clubhouse operation for Jan. 1. This was for loss control purposes. We are very sorry that our long standing patrons did not have an opportunity to enjoy themselves one last time at the bar, fish fry or restaurant. It was a very unfortunate set of circumstances, but a reality that had to be dealt with quickly to perserve our assets and prevent further losses!"
The key phrases here are "loss control purposes" and "to preserve our assets and prevent further losses!" Tell The Hound more, park district commissioners. Loss control usually means theft, like in retail operations where they have "loss control officers" or "loss control" operatives to guard against shoplifters.
Reading between the lines, was somebody at the course or the fancy clubhouse giving away the store? Is that what caused the quick shuttering of the clubhouse, which meant many had to forego their final fish fry? Inquiring minds need to know. In fact, The Hound believes it is park district commissioners' official duty to come forward and explain what assets had to be protected. Or is this a convenient excuse to shutter the place?
