There's nothing like a little hope to get one's hopes up. For some odd reason supporters of retaining Orchard Hills Golf Course got their hopes up with talk of reconsidering turning the course into a sports complex. Whomever spread that rumor certainly got it wrong. It wasn't The Hound.
The Hound read the Waukegan Park District's ad in Saturday's News-Sun and the last item in the ad says it all: "There is a rumor that the park board commissioners will be reconsidering their action....There will be no reconsideration of the motion at future board meetings." That sounds pretty final, despite Commissioner Bill Durkin asking to meet with the the Lake County Forest Preserve District for some sort of land deal.
That dog certainly don't hunt! If the forest preserve commissioners go along with Waukegan, how many other communities will want to do the same? It sure opens a Pandora's box for the district, which is quite stingy when it comes to doling out property to others. And why does Waukeganites think they should get something? County commissioners have pointed in the past to Waukegan voters' lack of support at the ballot box for past land acquisition referendums.
Supporters of keeping the golf course, though, continue to spout on, saying they will be gathering petitions to show the commissioners or of putting a referendum on the November ballot. It's too late. There's no hope.
Put a fork in it for Orchard Hills is done.
