Without any dog shows on the tube over the weekend, The Hound happened to prowl his favorite Ace Hardware store. It was like a miracle. There, waiting for us big strapping hounds, was everything we'll need come April or May. Except we're in the middle of another winter storm advisory.
While February is the shortest month, it sure seems we've been here for awhile, up to our hips in snow, cold and ice.
But that was of little concern Sunday, with the sun shining, as The Hound sniffed around the new grills, then checked out the lawn fertilizers and then the garden tools.
The Hound was at Ace to pick up engine oil for his mistress' snowblower in preparation for a predicted "up to nine inches" of snow. They moved it to the aisle across from the brand-spanking new lawn mowers. Where the oils and snowblower stuff used to be were row upon row of chain saws.
I heard some folks ask the sales people if they had any salt and I believe I heard one say they had a few bags left. Maybe the Gurnee Public Works director should check out Ace Hardware for salt.
What really warmed The Hound's paws were the flower and vegetable seeds ready for planting. Except there's about a foot of snow in the back 40.
Still, for a late February day, it was spring in bloom.
