Do not be shocked if Mundelein High’s boys basketball team is playing somewhere other than at Jacobs High in Algonquin during the holidays next year.
The Mustangs took a big-time hit in terms of quality of competion when they got stuck in the grouping for teams that finished third in pool play, even though Mundelein went 2-1 in its own pool.
Because of tiebreakers, Crystal Lake South (2-1) was awarded the pool title, even though Mundelein beat CL South, and CL Central (2-1) was awarded second place in the pool.
That relegated Mundelein to third place in its pool, which gave the Mustangs games on Friday and Saturday that were not what the team needs or wants in terms of competition..
The problem is that the field at Jacobs is top-heavy, and the caliber of teams drops way down very fast.
The Mustangs probably belong at Elgin or at Wheeling.
