The forever-churning rumor mill is now churning with the possibility that Zion-Benton High’s boys basketball team will not return to the Luther North holiday classic next December, but will opt instead to participate in the state’s No. 1 holiday hoops event – the Proviso West tournament.
Three words of advice to the powers that be at ZBTHS: Don’t do it!
True, next year, Zion will have a very strong team and be able to compete successfully at Proviso West, which annually features the state’s top teams. But what about the years after that, when the current group of top-line stars is gone? Does Z-B really want to become a designated opponent at Proviso West and spend the holidays each year playing 8:45 a.m. games in the consolation bracket?
Better to move up one step on the competitive ladder – say, from Luther North to Elgin, for example – than to make such a giant leap that, eventually, can only lead to a giant fall.
Latuh.
