Time to start a new streak

Now that the Eagles of Lakes High in Lake Villa have set the state record for consecutive defeats (73) by a prep girls basketball team, it’s time for the Eagles to start a new kind of streak. A winning streak.

The team now has more than two weeks to get ready for its next game, which happens to be against its biggest rival – Antioch – and, more to the point, also happens to be a winnable game for the Eagles.

So, circle the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 5, on your calendar, and come out to the gym in the school on Eagle Way to root the Eagles on to victory.

In the Locker Room, we love Antioch,

But as much as we love the Sequoits, we would love not having to use the number “74” in a story about the Lakes Eagles girls basketball team even more.

Antioch is a lot better team than you are giving them credit for. They have been competitive in all of their games this season. With that said, it's been a slow building process for Lakes girls' program. They will eventually turn the corner. I know that progress isn't being made as quickly as some people would like, but their future success is dependent on what is occurring at the lower levels. If they develop a good feeder system and have girls come into high school with the necessary skills to be competitive, then things will turn around. If that's not occurring in the community, then it will be difficult for any coach to turn that program around. It all starts with the building blocks. Are they in place? That's the first question that needs to be answered.
