The best thing to come out of Wednesday’s 70-61 loss by Waukegan High’s boys basketball team to Neuqua Valley at the Elgin tourney was the fact that the Bulldogs slapped a zone press on the Wildcats in the fourth quarter.
True, the Bulldogs gave up a lot of easy buckets when the press was broken, but they did force nine turnovers and create some scoring opportunities.
Speeding the game up and getting easy buckets on transition is the only way Waukegan can compete with powers like Zion-Benton and Highland Park.
The Bulldogs need to use their strengths more! The are extremely quick and athletic. They have to utilize those strengths. They need to play more full court man, more presses or traps. They need to create easier baskets. It would be nice to see both Springs and Carpenter or the floor together. They are both small but both very good defenders and do cause havoc in a full court man to man.
