The best part about prep cheerleading …

It is the ultimate team sport. It basically is the only sport around in which all team members are created equal. There is no “right field” in cheerleading and nobody to lead the team in scoring.

It doesn’t matter if the first 19 girls on the team are good. If the 20th girl stinks, the entire team stinks.

In just about every other sport, an individual can stand out in a crowd, or the team can overcome a weakness at a certain position.

Not in cheerleading.

Also, it’s the only sport in which we actually get to see the squad practicing. When you go to a basketball game and see the cheer squad do a stunt during a timeout, they actually are practicing it for a competition.

Speaking of competitions, the North Suburban Conference cheer meet is Sunday at Lake Zurich High.

Alas, it starts at 8:30 a.m. At that ridiculously early hour, you have to figure the only people who will be there will be moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandmas and underpaid sportswriters.
