Something was missing from Sunday morning’s North Suburban Conference Cheerleading Championships. And we’re not talking about Round Lake High’s squad, which forfeited its right to compete when half the squad quit during the holiday break. No, what was missing was the energy.
Maybe we can blame it on the early-morning start, in which some cheer squads boarded school buses at 6:30 a.m. in order to get to Lake Zurich High on time.
While a lot of the routines were solid, not once during the 12 performances was there a “Wow!” moment … one of those mental snapshots of the proceedings that you take home with you from the event.
In any case, congrats to Wauconda, Antioch, Lake Zurich and Stevenson … the four schools who were way better than everybody else.
Any of the four could have won the competition and all four deserved to win.
By the way, a tip of my Libertyville High cap to the ridiculously large number of Libertyville High kids who showed up at 8 a.m. to cheer on the Wildcats. You are better men than I am.
See yuh!
