Baseball had its New York Yankees, pro basketball had its Boston Celtics, and the NFL had the Green Bay Packers. Dynaties all. But the dynasty that is developing in NASCAR is going to kill fan interest in the sport
You simply cannot have one of the four Hendrick team drivers winning every race … with the other three team members blocking and banging to make sure it’s possible.
People will tune out.
Already, NASCAR has shown fan slippage in our area. Last year, the race in Joliet did not sell out, so it was moved to a night race this year in hopes of reviving interest.
If the only drivers who can win races are Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt or Casey Mears, you are going to lose all the casual fans.
And it’s looking like that’s what’s going to happen.
Maybe the next thing will be for NASCAR to lure Danica Patrick over from open-wheel racing.
Sure hope not.
