Teeing it up at Orchard Hills …not

In the spirit of full disclosure, let the record show that nobody in The Locker Room plays golf at Orchard Hills, and nobody in The Locker Room has any kids involved in Waukegan’s youth soccer program

That said, it just feels like a shaky proposition to literally destroy a golf course and turn it into something else – in this case, a soccer/baseball/football complex.

Two things on this: Golf is a very expensive sport, and by closing Orchard Hills, you’re eliminating a relatively inexpensive golf option without replacing it with a “cheap” golf option somewhere else. That has to hurt some of our fixed-income golfers.

The other thing is that while golf is definitely in a “down” cycle right now in terms of numbers of rounds played at most courses each year, what will happen if golf becomes “hot” once again?

You’re certainly not going to build a new, low-end, golf course.

In The Locker Room, we love kids, we like soccer, and we are certain that there are sound economic reasons for the Waukegan Park District to close the golf course.

That said, we don’t have to like it.

And we don’t.
