tell other people how to spend their money.
Today, the people being told how to spend are the men and women in charge of financing at Waukegan High.
The thinking is that big bucks are needed to bring the Weiss Field athletic complex up to the standards of places like Carmel and Libertyville. One great addition would be installing artificial turf on the football field. Another would be installing lights. Another would be the construction of new locker rooms, new washrooms and a new concession stand. As for who's going to pay for all this, the response is that you ask too many questions.

I agree that Waukegan's athletic facilities need to be updated BADLY..as far as who will pay for it--that's where it gets tricky. If you look at some of the bigger high schools in the area like Warren, Libertyville, Stevenson, and yes even Zion, they all have at least 2 things in common: incredible booster clubs (which includes boosters with $$$) and serious parental participation in all fundraising activities. As a Waukegan grad in the '80's, I saw first hand that not many parents were involved in MANY of the extracurricular activites. This is not to say that Waukegan parents are never involved, but in comparison to the schools/communites that I listed above, those communites have rich traditions of supporting their schools and re-investing into their school community. It's tough to get the facilites improved in Waukegan by selling candy bars or cookie dough. This will take corporate sponsors and private donors and MOST importantly, the parents, grandparents, cousins, uncles, brothers, and sisters of the Waukegan community at large. It can be done, but the Waukegan community has to make it a priority.
