Waukegan hires basketball coaches

With one mighty stroke of genius, Waukegan High athletic director Dave Perkins has improve TWO basketball programs at Waukegan.
First, he moved varsity assistant boys basketball coach Windell Piercy to the position of varsity head coach of the Waukegan girls team, replacing Mr. Drake, who had to step down after being promoted to an assistant-principal position at the school.
Piercy is a solid choice to keep the Bullldogs' program on the upswing, a tract that started under Drake. And while some segments of the community might be pining for veteran Jim Askew to return to coach the girls team, the feeling here is that Windell knows his hoops and that the program will continue to improve.
That done, Perkins then nabbed Tim Bowen to fill Piercy's former seat on the Waukegan High hoops bench next to second-year varsity boys head coach Ron Ashlaw.
A brilliant move. Bowen is a hard-nosed, no-nonsense type of coach who brings to the table some of the things that were missing from Ashlaw's bag last winter. The gut feeling is that this will be a match made in heaven.
Or, to put it another way, look out Zion-Benton!

I have a idea since Americans no longer have jobs or houses, thanks to free trade and illegal people stealing our jobs! How about if we close down the gym programs in ALL ILLINOIS HIGH SCHOOLS and go with classrooms for educating our kids! In old days there were no gym classes as they did their A, B, C's and learned how to STUDY! Gym is a waste of TAXPAYERS MONEY! Write your leaders to stop wasting money on gym!

Hiring Bowen to assist Ashlaw is a great move. Literally, a great move.

He will get a type of play out of those kids that Ashlaw may have trouble getting.

Is it kind of suspicious as well?

I think hiring Mr. Bowen is a great move, maybe the best hire Dave Perkins has made to date. It seems well thought out and with purpose. Unlike the Ashlaw hire. Ashlaw can’t get it done. He lost to much push while pushing the wrong way. The program was set back a couple of years with the one way "buy in" Ashlaw presented. Mr. Bowen WILL be the head coach before it's over. Mark my words! Players Respect good coaches with winning records. That is what the community was saying a year ago when Mr. Bowen was busy going 22-7! Welcome to the DOG POUND Mr. Bowen and bring your bark and your bite. These (Bull)dogs need it!

What should also be understood is that Coach Ashlaw made the initial recommendation of Coach Bowen for the position. He is undoubtedly doing what is best to BUILD A PROGRAM. That's the sign of a good head coach ... get good people involved in the program. And, by the way, they did beat New Trier last year, and he was the head coach for that game, as well as the North Chicago sweep. Let's not jump to any conclusions on how this might go ............

In The Locker Room, we are chuckling a bit that Coach Ashlaw is now going to know exactly what it feels like to be coaching men's basketball at UCLA. That is, every time the UCLA coach turns around at a home game, sitting three rows behind him is Johnny Wooden. Seriously, in The Locker Room, some of us are big fans of Ashlaw & believe that we're heading for a 20-plus win season and a showdown with Z-B in the sectional. But that said, there were too many quarters of games and halves of games last season when the Purple & Gold looked disinterested in playing. Being mentally ready to play for 32 minutes is every bit as challenging as being physically ready to play for 32 minutes. Maybe Tim Bowen -- one of the three sharpest boys hoops coaches in the county -- can help with the mental thoughness. The only real worry here is that Bowen's very good clubs were best-known for their in-your-face, hard-nosed defensive play and SLOW, patterned offensive play. In The Locker Room, we want the Bulldogs playing F-A-S-T and scoring in the 80s. We want 80-52 every night, but will settle for 80-73.
