Big boys about to join holiday hoop-la fray

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

Zion-Benton debuts today at Proviso West and Warren & Waukegan start on Monday at Pontiac. If you're scoring at home, here's a list of the most likely area boys basketball teams to win a holiday tourney title:

Sure thing -- none.
Good chance -- Waukegan (at Pontiac)
Decent chance -- Zion-Benton (at Proviso West) & Grant (at Grant)
Not much of a chance at all -- Warren (at Pontiac), North Chicago (at Wheeling), Lake Forest (at Bloomington) and Grayslake Central (at Bloomington)

ON an unrelated topic, anybody hear anything about fb coaches for Waukegan & North Chicago high schools. This may sound stupid considering it's December, but it's getting late.

Now that the holiday tournaments are over, I am amazed at how many quality teams are out there in Illinois. There are at least 50 teams that can put together a great game and upset anyone. Morton and Naperville Central were my surprise teams. The depth of quality teams showed in the upsets of Waukegan (Plainfield North) and Zion-Benton (twice). Should make for a great second half of the season and tournament play.

A little acknowledgment to the mistake about Waukegan(1-2) having a good chance in Pontiac and Warren(champs) having no chance?? Waukegan's good but I hope they don't rest on an early season win vs. Warren. They are not just a one man show. Coach Ramsey teaches "team" basketball...
