In case you’re wondering why the Chicago Public League has 60 high schools and five of them are powerhouses in boys basketball, five are powerhouses in girls basketball, and the vast majority stink in both sports, wonder no longer.
Wednesday night, Zion-Benton High will play at North Chicago in the North Suburban Conference boys basketball championship game. Between Zion, Waukegan, North Chicago and Gurnee, there are at least 8,000 people who would pay the five bucks to watch that game in a gym that holds about 1,800.
Laugh if you will, but when the pairings were announced for the IHSA Class 4A Barrington Sectional, the decent team that seemed to have landed in a good spot was Waukegan. Here’s why:
