Is Harry Potter gay? Should we care?

| | Comments (6) | TrackBacks (0)

Music by Cher, sassiness, good fashion-sense--none of which are found in J.K. Rowling's books.

Sure, a few homosexual cliches and stereotypes would have her readers question the sexual orientation of its characters, but cliches don't make for good writing. So it was a surprise this week when Rowling announced that Dumbledore was gay.

How about it? A gay wizard?

It wasn't obvious. Some of her fans applauded; others were outraged.

Because of the backlash, Christian groups are asking Congress to take action.

In the mean time, the gay community is bliss with Rowling's confession.

I'm still factoring in an eight book in the series, and by then, we'll have something else to talk about out other than a fictional character's sexual preference.

Or not.

I knew the media couldn’t pass up on this one. Harry Potter is a treasured part of our literary times. Why did rowling go and ruin what we’ve come to love?

Why does it matter now to reveal that hes gay. It doesn’t make sense.

Something seems wrong about an author revealing such an important aspect of a character outside the context of the story. Gay or straight, who cares? I just dislike the revelation, period. What's next? John Grisham saying all his lawyer characters secretly wanted to be astronauts? Stan Lee saying Spiderman is an anti-Semite? it shouldn't matter, yet I don't think authors should go around saying stuff like this after the fact.

Could he be gay? Who knows? I always knew he had a little attitude, Harry, that is....

i know those glasses must have hid his identity.

i mean there may have not been that agenda in say Robin and Batman, but hey, even a wizard might need some lovin;;

Before my children started to read the Potter books, I was worried that the author might have been incensed to relgious beliefs.

I'm thinking that there is no real threat to kids' here, unless we find examples in the book, none which I can think of, that give children a way of thinking homosexual.

It's not wrong to be homosexual. I'm just saying, we need to persuade children because they have to figure those things out for themself.

Gay? Aren't we looking for a little attention here?

Come on. It's a harmless fictional tale.
