5 best Spielberg movies

This might have been the hardest list I've ever compiled. If Steven Spielberg is not the greatest film-maker ever than I like to know who?

Even more difficult is judging his work. Which is the best?

Five best movies ever made by Steven Spielberg
5. "Saving Private Ryan": Truly a war epic that included a knockout cast.
4. "The Goonies," "Gremlins," "Jurassic Park," "Back to The Future": So what - I cheated. This is hardest list I've ever had to do. You try it.
3. "Jaws": A big fish and some men in a boat...and thus the start of the blockbuster era. Amazing.
2. "Indiana Jones": The whole franchise just gets better.
1. "Schindler's List": One of the saddest and more remarkable stories ever told. Telling the story in black and white worked.

- Staff writer Mike Mitchell

The criteria is that he must have been either the director or producer in the film.

How in God's name did you leave Munich off this list?

MITCHELL RESPONDS: Because there are about five to 10 movies better than "Munich." While good, I don't think Spielberg's forte is conspiracy theories like Oliver Stone. The movie was interesting and action-packed. But it did ask us to suspend our logic at times. Why did the French crime-lord care where the money was coming from? Like criminals have a conscience when dealing with large sums of cash.

Order is tough, but these were defining movies in moviemaking history

Jaws-made people scared to go in the water
Raiders of the Lost Ark- just good clean fun
E.T.- timeless classic
Saving Private Ryan-redefined war movies
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind

Honorable mentions: Back to the Future, Color Purple, Goonies, Gremlins, Roger Rabbit, Cape Fear, Jurraisic Park....

Agree with above about conspiracy and darker topics. Amistad and Cape Fear were good, but Munich and others fall flat.

MITCHELL RESPONDS: Nice list. I know, this is one of the more difficult lists I've ever done. It speaks to the success of one man.
