There are numerous groups up in arms over the comedy, "Tropic Thunder," because of its gaudy jokes about racism, sexism and metal disability.
The movie certainly walks a fine line.
But I'm not budging, on my opinion. You have to take the medium in perspective. And when you combine Jack Black and Stiller, you're going to get offensive material.
It's like going to a stand-up performance by the late George Carlin and complaining he has no understanding of religion.
I saw 'Tropic Thunder' Saturday and it is a satire against the stupidity of actors and the self-importance of the movie business in general. It is a very funny movie, and it is on the level of "South Park" in the shots it takes and the edginess of its comedy. If this sort of humor offends you, you won't like it.
But the targets are dumb actors, not black people, or the mentally handicapped, and it is so obvious if you bother to see the movie. If you count the number of times a word is used or look at posters, it may not be so obvious. But then, that's judging a book by its cover, and it's no more valid than accepting stereotypes as valid.
