My Big Fat Mouth: Mike Mitchell : February 2008 Archives

Mike Mitchell : February 2008 Archives

Sure this was the worst winter in Naperville memory, the worst TV season in decades, the lamest annual movie season--but now the Oscars were one of the worst ever.

Considering there weren't many blockbuster movies nominated, ratings might have went sour because people couldn't identify with the winners. So now what?

Baseball season is not for another month, most sitcoms won't return to air in April. There isn't much to talk about on the entertainment front.

The second author for Naperville READS 2008, Daniel Pink, will speak at the Chamber Luncheon on Monday at the Wyndham Hotel-Lisle, and speak to teachers at Waubonsie Valley High School as the in-service project on Monday after school.

Then the author of "Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future," will meet with 800 Naperville Central High School students at 440 W. Aurora Ave. on Tuesday morning, and then speak at a public program at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Pfeiffer Hall at North Central College.

If you believe the Oscars are there to kiss up to the year's biggest box office killers, then you're wrong.

There are myriad shows that fans can get their kicks from --Golden Globes, etc.--but the Oscars are devoted to the finest in film. Sometimes that's not always what we want, especially with this year's Best Picture Nominees.

Did the academy get it right this year?

If you haven't heard it yet Miley Cyrus is following in the footsteps of Spears.

But is that realistic? Is it too soon to put a label on a child performer?

Come on! Isn't this nation soft enough? We've already been labeled with being too fat, unoriginal, lacking passion, lacking interest in political issues, maintaining an obsession with celebrities--but now we can't even play video games without getting hurt.

Yes, apparently we're so inept at real-life sports and fitness, that we even get hurt in virtual sports.

Would you even report an injury caused from playing a video game? Don't you believe we're overzealous about our health? A few bruises is nothing to sneeze about.

Please say you're not suffering from tendonitis due to virtual tennis.
