The slim chance Neuqua Valley had left to reach the playoffs was eliminated earlier this afternoon. Neuqua, which hadn't missed the postseason since 2001, finished 4-5. The Wildcats needed fewer than 256 teams to have at least five wins.
As of the latest update by the IHSA there are 55 spots still open, but 67 teams sit at 5-4.
I reported earlier this week in The Sun that Neuqua might be able to slide in to spot No. 32 in the Class 8A field. But my logic was faulty. I didn't take into account all 256 teams had to be selected before the IHSA breaks teams into the eight, 32-team classes.
While the IHSA does allow the possibility for a four-win team to enter the field, it hasn't happened yet.
