While breaking down Wheaton North during the next two weeks, Naperville Central and Naperville North won't have to plan for Falcons quarterback Taylor Graham. The senior - who has verbally committed to Ohio State and is the son of Kent, the former NFL quarterback - is out with a knee injury.

"He's done," Wheaton North coach Joe Wardynski said Wednesday. "He won't play again (this season)."

Graham missed a significant part of his junior season with a broken ankle. The 6-foot-5-inch, 215-pound pocket passer then injured his knee during a Week 2 defeat at Lake Zurich. The knee problem was aggravated again when he returned to last week's 45-0 loss to Wheaton Warrenville South.

"I feel bad for the kid," Wardynski said. "He had - what? - four-and-a-half games where he was healthy last year. And one-and-a-half games this year."

Beacon News writer Jim Owczarski breaks down West Aurora's place in the DuPage Valley Conference and its upcoming matchup against Naperville Central. The Blackhawks are pinning their hopes on an offensive line that averages 6 feet, 3 inches and 263 pounds.

Since joining the DuPage Valley Conference in 1997, West Aurora has gone 17-67. Here is how the Blackhawks have stacked up against their rivals over the years:

6-6 vs. Glenbard East
5-7 vs. West Chicago
4-8 vs. Wheaton North
2-10 vs. Glenbard North
0-12 vs. Naperville Central
0-12 vs. Naperville North
0-12 vs. Wheaton Warrenville South

In what's shaping up as a banner year for Chicago-area quarterbacks, Lake Forest's Tommy Rees has verbally committed to Notre Dame. Tuesday's announcement means that Rees will join Downers Grove South's Chandler Whitmer (Illinois) and Wheaton North's Taylor Graham (Ohio State) as BCS-caliber quarterbacks. Rees' father Bill is a former UCLA assistant and front-office staffer for several NFL organizations.

The DuPage Valley Conference just got a little more interesting for the 2009 season. Wheaton North quarterback Taylor Graham has verbally committed to Ohio State, where his father Kent once played before beginning a long NFL career.

Graham reportedly picked the Buckeyes over Michigan State, UCLA, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado and Duke.

"I had all the information I needed to make my decision," Graham told Taylor Bell of the Chicago Sun-Times. "I felt comfortable. It wasn't just because my dad went there. I felt God led me there."

The other day the Jacksonville Jaguars reached verbal agreements with 18 undrafted free agents. They are from programs like Nebraska, Colorado and Wheaton College.

Yes, there was a contract for Pete Ittersagen, the 5-foot-10-inch cornerback out of Wheaton North and Wheaton College. The Division III All-American finished his career with 60 passes broken up, which is fifth all-time on that level, and also distinguished himself as a return specialist. If you can add value on special teams, you increase your odds of making an NFL roster.

Ittersagen is hoping to join Andy Studebaker on the NFL level. Studebaker, another Wheaton College product, is a defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nick Lifka.jpgAccording to Naperville North athletic director Doug Smith, Harshbarger-Welzel Field will be ready for the beginning of next season. Its renovation pushed the Huskies and linebacker Nick Lifka (pictured) to Benedictine for the first and second rounds of the 2008 playoffs, but coming off a 10-1 season they are expected to have a full slate of home games.

The 2009 schedule includes nonconference games against Neuqua Valley and St. Charles East, an Oct. 2 crosstown matchup versus Naperville Central at North Central College and a new DuPage Valley Conference rotation. The Wheaton Warrenville South showdown has been moved from Week 9 to Week 5.
