Just because Brian Alden has won the past two state championships in the 50-yard and the 100-yard freestyle, that doesn't mean the Neuqua Valley senior will get his chance to three-peat in those events. Neuqua coach Chad Allen told The Sun on Saturday that he might not have Alden swim both freestyle sprints in the tournament.
While speaking hypothetically during the Upstate Eight Conference meet, Allen said he might not enter Alden in both the 50 and 100 freestyles because Alden could win in other events. With the Wildcats deeper than they were last year, a team state title is within reach.
"He can swim anything," Allen said.
Alden said he wasn't sure which events he will be swimming at the sectional on Feb. 16.
"No. Not yet," Alden said. "Hopefully, 50 and 100. Whatever's best for the team. We're figuring that all out."
There is no doubt that Alden could be successful in other events. He set a conference record in the 100 butterfly on Saturday, for example.
But if he is forced to give up the chance to win a third consecutive state title in the 100 or 50, will he able to deal with that?
"It wouldn't be a problem," Alden said. "But I'd like to (defend the titles)."
