EVANSTON -- The Wildcats secured their first ever team state championship on Saturday afternoon with a first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The win in the 200 free relay gave the Wildcats a 27-point cushion with three events to go. New Trier closed the gap to 15 points with a third in the 100 backstroke.

That meant Neuqua needed only to swim the 400 freestyle relay without being disqualified in order to hold off two-time defending champion New Trier. The Wildcats finished fourth in the 400 relay and won the championship 144-139 over New Trier, which won the final event.

Naperville North finished fifth. Naperville Central was sixth.

Neuqua is the first Naperville area team to win the state title since Central in 2002.
