There was a scout watching the Naperville Central boys rally in the fourth quarter to beat Homewood-Flossmoor on Tuesday night. He sat on the far side of the pool deck, observing the action and taking notes.
The scout wasn't there to figure out how to inform his team about how to beat Naperville Central, however, he was there to inform Naperville Central about Naperville Central.
There as a favor for Central coach Bill Salentine, former Waubonsie Valley coach Tom Musch was quick to point out how the Redhawks were producing goals on Tuesday night not so much from team play, but from athletic talent alone. That, Musch told The Heat Index, was to be expected at this point in the season.
After the game, Salentine huddled with Musch to pick his brain. And what did they discuss?
"We're just talking," Salentine said. "We're just talking."
That much I gathered from the lip movement and hand gestures. Another approach then.
Why did Salentine ask Musch to scout the Redhawks?
"Sometimes another set of eyes helps," Salentine said.
I wonder if Musch saw something that will help Central figure out its middle-of-the game struggles, which have made it necessary for the Redhawks to rally the last two times out?

What was the purpose of this article? You should be writing about the
players and other game details, not how the coach invited his buddy to
a game to watch his team.
Secondly, Musch isn't that much of an expert on water polo. This was a
waste of an article.
Purpose of the blog was to provide an insider's look to what a coach might do to get another look at his team - something beyond what fans might see at the game.
And the game was covered in The Sun print edition and on-line at napersun.com/sports.
As for Musch, he was the Waubonsie water polo coach at one time - even though his main focus was swimming when he coached.
