Five make Sun-Times' Top 100

A trio of shortstops heads up the area's five-player contingent named to the Sun-Times' Top 100 softball list released on Saturday.

Naperville North's Sarah Adam, Benet's Laura Canulli and Neuqua Valley's Jenna Marsalli are joined on the Top 100 by Naperville Central pitcher Natalie Wunderlich and Waubonsie Valley outfielder Jess Lobraco.

Water Polo

The Naperville Central girls team picked up its first two losses of the season on Saturday at the Lyons tournament, losing 7-6 to Illpolo.com No. 12 Evanston and 6-3 to No. 7 Lyons. The Redhawks brought a 12-0 record into the tournament and placed third with wins over Stevenson and, for the third time this year, against Waubonsie Valley.

Central is ranked eighth in the current Illpolo.com poll. Waubonsie is No. 11 and Neuqua Valley is No. 15.

...

Neuqua's Chelsea Reczek was named to the Illpolo.com Ballers list for week 3, making her the only area player in boys or girls to make the list all three weeks.

Other Ballers this week are: Central's Kara Wilson and Sam Virella, Waubonsie's Allison Szott and Megan McWhirter and North's Kayla Westman for the girls; North's Conor Handley and Central's Ben Reasons on the boys side.

Boys Volleyball

While I spent my afternoon on 115th Street in Chicago watching Waubonsie Valley place sixth in the Marist Invitational, Naperville Central and Naperville North were busy winning tournaments elsewhere.

In Buffalo Grove, the Huskies went 3-1 to win the Bison Battle and had coach Roger Strausberger making sure his team stays "respectful and not be too loud and obnoxious" with their on-court celebrations. This is a good response for North following a disappearing act in a season-opening loss to Neuqua Valley.

The Redhawks went 5-0 at the Hoffman Estates Invitational, winning three-game matches both in the semifinals against Mundelein and in the finals against New Trier. This is a promising start for Central and first-year coach Bryan Johnwick.
